Job Summary: Registered Nurse - PICU (Travel/Contract)

Location: Newark, New Jersey
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Primary Unit: Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
  • Floating: May float to Pediatrics and NICU; additional float units possible based on skill set and hospital needs (floating confirmed with traveler)
  • Schedule: Every other weekend (Saturday/Sunday)
  • Patient Ratio: Approximately 1:2+
  • Unit Size: 19 beds
  • Charting System: EPIC
  • Uniform: Navy Blue scrubs

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 2+ years of PICU critical care experience required
  • 1 year of cardiac experience strongly preferred (both must be documented on skills checklist)
  • Experience with Medtronic pacemakers and Tele monitoring required
  • Experience with BIPAP/CPAP, ventilators, high flow nasal cannula, and tracheostomies required
  • Prior travel experience required (first-time travelers are not accepted)

Certifications Required

  • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA required (RQI and instructor cards acceptable)
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) - AHA required (RQI and instructor cards acceptable)
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) preferred but not required
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - Required for adult critical care units; confirm if required for PICU
  • Other certifications may be required depending on unit and role (confirm with program coordinator)

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Background Check: Criminal background check required within 30 days of start, including alias checks and multi-level screenings
  • Drug Screen: 10-panel urine drug screen required within 30 days of start
  • Health Documents:
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within required timeframe
    • Physical exam within 12 months, cleared to perform essential job functions and free of communicable disease
    • Seasonal influenza vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually
    • Immunizations or proof of immunity for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B, Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap
  • Fit Testing: On-site fit test mandatory; must be clean-shaven unless approved accommodation for PAPR
  • Respiratory Medical Clearance: Required prior to start and updated annually
  • Color Blind Testing: Required within one year if job tasks require color discrimination
  • Competency Exams: Medication test, dysrhythmia/EKG competency, and other relevant competency exams required within 72 hours of signing and within 12 months of start
  • Skills Checklist: Must be completed and updated annually, documenting required skills and experience
  • References: Two references within last 2 years, including at least one managerial reference
  • Employment History: Resume or application with 7 years of work history required; New Jersey candidates require verification of at least 1 year prior to start with no gaps over 30 days

Additional Requirements

  • Must complete facility-specific floating policy for every new assignment
  • Must complete annual education sign-off and review facility-specific education materials prior to start
  • Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB) certification required for ER, Pediatric ER, and Behavioral Health RNs (includes online and in-person portions)
  • Pass/fail testing for EKG and medication knowledge required with remediation process if failed
  • Must comply with all facility-specific policies and documentation requirements

Summary

This is a 13-week travel contract for an experienced Registered Nurse with a minimum of 2 years PICU critical care experience and prior travel experience. The role requires strong pediatric critical care skills, including cardiac experience, and certifications in BLS and PALS. The nurse will primarily work in the PICU with potential floating to Pediatrics and NICU. Compliance with extensive health, background, and competency documentation is mandatory.
