Job Summary: Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Newark, New Jersey
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit & Schedule

  • Primary Unit: Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
  • Floating to Pediatrics and NICU as needed (confirm with traveler)
  • Possible additional float units based on skill set and hospital needs
  • Schedule: Every other weekend (Saturday/Sunday)
  • Patient Ratio: Approximately 1:2+
  • Unit Size: 19 beds

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years of PICU critical care experience required
  • 1 year of cardiac experience strongly preferred (both must be documented on skills checklist)
  • Prior travel experience required (first-time travelers not accepted)

Required Skills & Competencies

  • Experience with Medtronic pacemakers and telemetry monitoring
  • Proficient in BIPAP/CPAP, ventilators, high flow nasal cannula, and tracheostomies
  • Charting system: EPIC

Certifications Required

  • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA required (RQI and instructor cards acceptable)
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) - AHA required (RQI and instructor cards acceptable)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - Required for adult critical care units; confirm if required for PICU
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) - Preferred but not required
  • Other certifications may be required depending on unit assignment (confirm with program coordinator)

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Background Check: Criminal background check required within 30 days of start
  • Drug Screen: 10-panel urine drug screen required within 30 days of start
  • Health Documents:
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within required timeframe
    • Physical exam within the last 12 months, cleared to perform essential job functions
    • Seasonal influenza vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually
    • Immunizations: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B, Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (documentation required)
  • Fit Testing: On-site N-95 respirator fit test required; facial hair must be shaved unless accommodation approved
  • Respiratory Medical Clearance required prior to start
  • Color Blind Testing: Required if job tasks require color discrimination
  • Competency Exams: Medication test, Dysrhythmia/EKG competency, and other unit-specific exams required within 72 hours of signing
  • Skills Checklist: Must be completed and updated annually
  • References: Two references within last 2 years, including at least one managerial reference
  • Employment Application or Resume: Must include 7 years of work history with all gaps accounted for
  • Work History Verification: Minimum 1 year prior to start date verified (New Jersey state requirement)

Additional Notes

  • Scrub color: Navy Blue
  • Must complete facility-specific floating policy for every new assignment
  • Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB) certification required for ER, Pediatric ER, and Behavioral Health RNs (not specifically for PICU)
  • Annual education sign-off and other facility-specific training required prior to start
  • Candidates switching between RWJ sites within 30 days may have some documentation accepted from previous assignment

This position is ideal for experienced PICU nurses with cardiac experience who have prior travel contract experience and meet the comprehensive certification and compliance requirements.
