Job Opportunity: Laboratory Specialist (Travel/Contract)
Location: New Haven, Connecticut
Specialty: Laboratory (MLS or MLT)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Description
- Must have significant blood bank experience, preferably in a large hospital, trauma center, or academic medical center.
- Blood Bank experience is required.
- First-time travelers accepted.
- Weekend requirement: Work a 12-hour shift (7 PM - 7:30 AM) on either Saturday or Sunday for two consecutive weekends, followed by a weekend off.
- Guaranteed hours.
- Start date: ASAP.
Required Certifications
- MLS or MLT certification.
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA or ARC only.
- BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA or ARC only.
- Other certifications may be required depending on unit assignment (e.g., PALS, NRP, CHEMO, TNCC, EFM). Always verify unit-specific requirements.
Experience Requirements
- Specialty years of experience: Not explicitly stated, but strong blood banking experience is mandatory.

Background Checks & Verifications
- 7-year criminal background check required within 12 months of start; must be updated annually.

Competencies & Testing

- Other competency exams may be required depending on unit.
Health & Immunization Requirements
- Physical exam within 12 months of start.
- Fit mask test within 12 months of start; must be updated annually.
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray documentation required.
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccination highly preferred for certain specialties.
- Required immunizations or proof of immunity: Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella. Medical exemptions require facility approval.
- 10-panel drug screen within 12 months of start.
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season.
- COVID vaccination preferred but not mandatory.

- Stroke Education
- CLABSI Prevention
- Preventing Pressure Injury
- Language Services
- CAUTI Education
- Patient Transportation with Oxygen
- Suicide Risk and Environmental Assessment
- Pyxis ES MedStation
- Baxter Pump Interoperability
- Patient Bedside Rounding
- Ventricular Assist Device Awareness
- Blood Administration Module (annual update required)
- New Employee Orientation
- 21st Century Cures Act Module (not required for Laboratory techs)
- Chaperone Policy Training
- EPIC testing or training may be required depending on experience and unit.
Employment History & Documentation
- Must provide a 7-year work history with no gaps greater than 90 days.
- Verification of last 7 years of employment required for all start dates on/after 8/2/2024.
- Skills checklist required within 12 months of start.
- Attestation of prior radiation exposure required for certain tech roles (not specifically for laboratory).
Additional Notes
- Return to Office (RTO) restrictions: Absences greater than 7 days require approval.
- Strong preference for candidates with experience in trauma or academic medical centers.
