Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

  • Work on a surgical/medicine inpatient floor with a 1:6 nurse-to-patient ratio.
  • 12-hour night shifts.
  • Contract lengths accepted: 13 to 26 weeks.
  • Float to like units as needed.
  • Weekend requirement: every other weekend.
  • Must participate in Storm Team and/or Hurricane Team during catastrophic events or disasters.
  • Patient population includes a wide range of surgical and trauma cases (e.g., cellulitis, appendicitis, cholecystitis, trauma from accidents, cancers, kidney stones, vascular diseases).
  • Surgical procedures include cholecystectomy, appendectomy, hernia repair, tumor removal, amputations, and more.
  • Use of special equipment such as wound vacs, chest tubes, NG tubes, JP drains, hemovac drains, and penrose drains.
  • Unit systems include Pyxis, EPIC, and SBAR communication.

Required Experience & Skills

  • Minimum 2 years of surgical unit experience (highest required years of experience).
  • Travel experience preferred but not required.
  • Must pass EKG testing prior to start.

Clinical Skills

  • Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias.
  • Use of Rapid Response Teams.
  • Blood product administration.
  • Central and peripheral line care/management.
  • Management of surgical drains.
  • Nasal cannula and non-invasive airway management.
  • Isolation precautions.
  • Wound care and wound vac management.

Preferred Skills

  • Titration of cardiac and vasoactive drips.
  • Chest tube management (Emerson/Pleur-evac).

Certifications Required

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • NIH Stroke Certification

Orientation & Scheduling

  • 2 days hospital orientation plus 24 hours floor training.
  • Scheduling as needed.
  • Scrubs: All Navy or Navy bottoms with white tops.

Compliance & Background Requirements

  • Criminal background checks within 90 days for all locations lived in the last 7 years.
  • Education verification for highest degree earned specific to nursing profession.
  • State-specific registry and exclusion list checks within 90 days prior to start (North Carolina Healthcare Personnel Registry and Division of Medical Assistance).
  • Drug screening within 30 days of start (10-panel, negative result required).
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start; if past positive TB, physical within 30 days required.
  • Fit mask testing (N95 or PAPR training) within 1 year of start; onsite fit testing available if needed.
  • Immunizations and titers required: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B (or facility-specific declination), seasonal flu vaccine or approved exemption.
  • TB testing: PPD, Qgold, or Tspot within 1 year; if positive, chest x-ray within 5 years and physician-signed TB questionnaire within 30 days of start.

Additional Notes

  • No Return to Office (RTO) after booking allowed except as specified (max 7 days for auto offer).
  • Candidates must be prepared to work in a high-acuity, combined medical-surgical and surgical stepdown unit.
  • Must complete required facility-specific documents and training modules prior to start, including confidentiality agreements, hospital policies, medication safety, and non-Novant health worker orientation.
  • Candidates will be required to complete competency exams including dysrhythmia/EKG competency within 72 hours of start.
  • Participation in disaster response teams is mandatory during contract.

This position is ideal for experienced surgical RNs comfortable with trauma and surgical patient care, who are flexible with scheduling and able to work in a dynamic, high-acuity environment.
