Experience Requirements
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience required.
- Candidates with MedSurg RN experience plus ICU and PCU patient experience with an additional 2 years will also be considered.
- Prior travel experience is NOT explicitly required.
Certifications Required
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA only, RQI acceptable
- BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA only, RQI acceptable
- Other certifications may be required depending on unit (e.g., PALS, NRP, CHEMO, TNCC, EFM, NIH Stroke Certification) — verify per unit.
Job Description & Responsibilities
- Travelers must work every other weekend; consecutive weekends may be required based on operational needs.
- Charge nurse responsibilities may be assigned with training and resources.
- Floating to different levels of care (Med-Surg, PCU, ICU) may be required.
- Teaching facility: travel nurses must agree to precepting and/or having students shadow them.
- Staffing ratios:
- PCU: 1:4
- MedSurg: 1:5-6 (sometimes mixed with PCU patients)
- Unit is a 32-bed mixed model cardio-pulmonary unit with emphasis on pulmonary care.
- Patient population includes cardiac medical, valve replacement, COPD, CHF, pulmonary fibrosis, lung cancer, lung transplant (pre/post), trach-to-vent patients, neurodegenerative diseases, trauma, flu, TB, and COVID-19.
Important Facility Policies
- COVID-19 vaccine is required for all travelers (medical or religious exemptions accepted with documentation).
- Indiana RNs are generally not allowed to work past 11/30/24 except for Periop/OR RN’s, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers (including ENDO, IR RN, PACU, Cath Lab RN, SDS).
Staffing & Scheduling Notes
- Call-ins for contracted shifts must be made up during the pay period or added to the end of the contract depending on FTE status.
- Local candidates are not accepted.
Required Documents & Compliance
- Valid Driver’s License or Passport (clear copy)
- Background checks including:
- 7-year residence/work history
- SSN Trace
- County, Statewide, National Sex Offender checks
- FACIS Level III
- Education verification
- State RN license verification (within 30 days of start)
- Physical exam within 12 months of start
- Fit mask test within 12 months (specific approved respirators required)
- Immunizations and titers:
- Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted
- Varicella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted
- Hepatitis B: Series, titer, or signed declination required
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap: Preferred but not required
- Flu vaccination/documentation required for flu season (declinations not accepted; medical/religious exemptions allowed)
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months
- TB testing within 1 year (PPD, QuantiFERON, or T-SPOT) with chest x-ray if positive history
- Competency exams including medication/pharmacology and unit competency exam
- References: Minimum 2 from recent employment with supervisory titles
- Skills checklist within 12 months, completed annually
- Completion of facility-specific orientation, compliance, and safety forms (time sensitive)
- Mandatory completion of IU Health RRT modules for RRT candidates (22 modules, deadline prior to start)
Additional Notes
- Candidates must be willing to float and precept students.
- On-site PAPR available at Methodist and University campuses with automatic approval.
- On-site fit testing is a last resort and limited to certain campuses.
- Strict compliance with facility-specific documentation and orientation requirements is mandatory.
This position is ideal for experienced RNs comfortable working in a cardio-pulmonary mixed unit with a pulmonary emphasis, who are flexible with floating and teaching responsibilities, and who meet strict certification and immunization requirements.
