Job Opportunity: Medical Technologist (Laboratory)
Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Details
- Specialty: Medical Technologist - strictly Microbiology (no floating between service lines)
- Shift: Tuesday to Saturday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM
- On-call: No
- Weekend Requirement: Rotating weekends and holidays, every 3rd weekend
Experience & Education Requirements
- Years of Experience Required: Minimum 3 years preferred
- First-timers: Accepted
- Education: Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology or relevant medical/scientific discipline
- Certification: ASCP BOC Medical Technologist certification or equivalent specialty lab certification required
- Preferred Experience:
- Microbiology and Beaker system experience
- Culture setup, Gram stain reading and reporting
- PCR Testing
- Experience with plating, reading Gram stains, and rapid molecular testing (BioFire Torch panels, Cepheid assays)
Job Responsibilities
- Prepare specimens for testing
- Perform routine and specialized laboratory tests
- Conduct quality control and troubleshoot errors and instruments
- Perform preventative maintenance
- Communicate technical information to medical and non-medical personnel
- Assist with training laboratory personnel
- Participate in continuing education
- Recognize normal and abnormal lab values
- Model professional standards of behavior
Location & Travel
- Radius Rule: 60 miles
- Locals: Accepted on a case-by-case basis
Required Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support): Required for all clinical staff (AHA or ARC certification)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support): Required for specific units; verify if applicable
- Other certifications may be required depending on unit assignment (verify with recruiter)
Licensure & Verification
- State License: South Carolina license required (primary source verification)
- Licensure must be active, unencumbered, and no pending actions
- Licensure hits must be approved by facility
- Temporary/walk-through licenses may be available under certain conditions
Health & Compliance Requirements
- Physical Exam: Initial and annual updates required, attesting ability to meet physical demands
- Fit Mask Test: N95 fit test within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually
- Immunizations & Titers:
- Tdap within 10 years or declination form
- Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days or proof of prior positive with chest x-ray
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: Positive titers or vaccination series with boosters as needed
- Hepatitis B: Titer, vaccine series, or declination required
- Seasonal Flu Vaccine: Required during flu season or medical/religious exemption (no declinations accepted)
- Drug Testing: 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start (no instant tests)
- COVID-19 Vaccination: Not required but highly preferred; vaccination records must be uploaded or declination form completed
Background & Documentation
- Annual background check covering last 7 years of residence and employment
- Employment verification for last 3 clinical employers
- Education verification required; diploma or transcripts accepted as placeholder if needed
- Proof of 2 clinical references required
- Competency exams and color blindness testing required prior to start
- Facility-specific orientation modules must be completed before orientation
- Clear, passport-style photo required for badge
Additional Notes
- Guaranteed hours: Facility may call off 1 shift every 2 weeks
- No prior travel experience explicitly required
- Strict adherence to facility policies and documentation submission timelines is mandatory
