Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Durham, North Carolina
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse
  • Employment Type: Travel/Contract
  • Experience Required: Minimum 2 years in specialty (PCICU experience strongly preferred; NICU, Pediatric Stepdown, and Pediatric RNs also considered)
  • Licensure: North Carolina or Compact license required and must be in hand
  • Certifications Required:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
  • Prior travel experience: Not explicitly required (First-timers OK)
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • Floating: Yes
  • Orientation: Bi-weekly
  • Local candidates within 75 miles considered

Key Job Requirements

  • Flu vaccination is mandatory; no exemptions or declinations accepted
  • Must be able to work weekends every other weekend
  • Floating between units is required
  • Candidates must have all required certifications and licensure prior to start

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • I9 or Attestation
  • Government-issued photo ID (Driver’s License or State ID)
  • Social Security Card (if used for I9)
  • Background checks within 90 days including:
    • SSN Trace, Counties, Alias, Nationwide, Sex Offender, International (if applicable)
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM
    • HHS/OIG
    • Education Verification (for certain specialties)
  • OFAC Sanctions List Search within 30 days of start
  • Physical Exam within 12 months of start
  • Negative TB test or Chest X-Ray within 12 months (with specific requirements for positive history)
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccination every 10 years
  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella vaccination or positive antibody titers (no exemptions)
  • Hepatitis B titer, vaccine series, or declination
  • Varicella vaccination or positive titer (boosters required if low/equivocal)
  • Drug Testing: Negative 10-panel within 30 days of start (instant tests not accepted)
  • Seasonal Flu Vaccination for 2025-26 (mandatory for new candidates starting Oct-Mar; no exemptions)
  • Polio vaccine or signed attestation

Additional Requirements

  • Two professional references from employment within the last 12 months (at least one supervisor)
  • Employment application with 7 years of work history
  • Annual skills checklist update
  • Competency exams and unit-specific competency testing required
  • Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) training provided during orientation (valid for 2 years)
  • Pass/Fail testing for EKG/Medication knowledge (not required for RRTs)
  • Duke Guest Account setup required prior to clearance for access to orientation and work systems

Certifications & Competencies

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) recommended (AHA only)
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Procedure) recommended (AHA/AAP only)
  • Chemotherapy certification if applicable
  • Specialty-specific tech certifications required where applicable (e.g., CT Tech, MRI Tech, Sonographer, Surgical Tech)
  • CEUs required for Mammography Techs
  • Acknowledgement of pass/fail testing required for all except RRTs

Notes

  • Candidates with less than a 30-day gap between previous Duke assignments may have some documentation requirements waived or accepted on file
  • Orientation includes online modules that must be completed prior to starting
  • Candidate must complete all required documentation and clearances before starting
  • Floating and weekend work are mandatory components of the role

This position is ideal for Registered Nurses with at least 2 years of experience, preferably with PCICU or pediatric nursing backgrounds, who are flexible with floating and weekend shifts and can comply with strict vaccination and documentation requirements.
