PCU/Stepdown Travel Nurse Opportunity
Location: South Charleston, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Details
- Unit: PCU - Stepdown
- Beds: 11 (expanding to 12 later in 2023)
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4
- Monitor Tech available 24/7; RNs read telemetry strips
- Charge Nurse ICU available as resource; Charge Nurse assigned in PCU
- Nurse aids (PCT/CNA) ratio: 1 per 10 patients; nurses assist with general care and unit clerk duties
- Floating required to ICU, Stepdown, Med-Surg Telemetry, and Emergency Department as needed
Required Certifications
- BLS (AHA)
- ACLS
- NIHSS
Experience Requirements
- Specialty: PCU/Stepdown with ICU skill set
- Minimum 1-2 years critical care experience (higher value taken)
- Prior travel experience required
- Skills needed: Bipap, Cpap, Mechanical Ventilation, telemetry, critical drips, post cardiac cath care
- Preferred but not required: CRRT and IABP experience
- Preferred experience (updated 5/22/2025):
- Arterial Line experience
- Post Fem Pop
- Post Endarterectomy
- ECAR
- TVAR
Patient Population / Common Diagnoses
- Post-op vascular patients
- Hemodynamically stable cardiac dysrhythmias
- CVA (stroke)
- Sepsis
- Renal patients
- Stable acute MI
- Unstable angina
- Post Cardiac Cath with PCTA or significant blockage
Clinical Responsibilities
- RN drip titration required
- Common drips: Insulin, Cardizem, Heparin, Amiodarone, low dose Dopamine
- Use of respiratory equipment: Cpap, Bipap, High flow O2, Mechanical ventilation via Tracheostomy
- Use of specialty beds and IV pumps
Scheduling & Orientation
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend
- Holiday requirement: Rotational
- Orientation:
- General hospital orientation (first day)
- Full day nursing orientation for RNs/LPNs
- Computer training (half day for CNAs, full day for nurses)
- Two 12-hour orientation shifts with preceptor
- Abbreviated Initial Skills Checklist due within 90 days
- Shift times example: 1845-0715 (night shift)
- Attempts made to accommodate block scheduling but not guaranteed
Dress Code
- RN/LPN: Navy solid color scrubs
- CNAs/Monitor Techs: Dark grey/pewter solid color scrubs
- No embroidery or patterns allowed on scrubs
- Solid color fleece zip-ups allowed in grey, black, navy, or royal blue
- Solid undershirts in white, grey, or black matching scrub top color
- Closed-toed shoes only; no crocs
This position is ideal for experienced PCU/Stepdown nurses with critical care skills and prior travel experience who are comfortable floating to ICU and other units as needed.
