Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (RN) - Cardiac ICU

Location: New Haven, Connecticut

Job Description

  • Unit: Cardiac ICU (CTICU)
  • Start Date: ASAP
  • Patient Ratios:
    • Days: Average 1:2
    • Nights: Average 1:2
  • Experience Required:
    • Minimum 3 years of cardiac ICU experience (highest requirement)
    • Must have 1 year of Level 1 trauma center experience
  • First-timers: Accepted if they have cardio-thoracic ICU and/or critical care experience
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • On-call: Not required
  • Floating: May float within scope to meet facility needs
  • Block Schedule: Not accommodated
  • Pending License: Accepted
  • Guaranteed Hours: Yes
  • Special Skills: Proficiency with Swan-Ganz monitoring required
  • Facility Type: Short Term Acute Care, Level I Trauma Center
  • Charting System: Epic

Certifications Required

  • NIH Stroke Certification
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)

Additional Experience & Requirements

  • Prior travel experience is not explicitly required
  • Must be knowledgeable and experienced in a high acuity cardiac ICU setting

Background Checks & Verifications

  • 7-year criminal background check (updated annually)
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM check within 30 days of start
  • HHS/OIG check within 30 days of start
  • Education verification (including foreign equivalency if applicable)
  • State license primary source verification within 30 days of start
  • NURSYS verification within 30 days of start

Competency Exams & Testing

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam (must score 85%)
  • Color Blind Testing (required for all candidates starting on/after 8/2/2024, must score 80%)
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam (required for all ICU units including Cardiac ICU)

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 12 months of start
  • Fit mask test within 12 months of start (annual update required)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray documentation
  • TB questionnaire (updated annually)
  • Immunizations:
    • Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella (MMR) - positive titer or vaccines required
    • Hepatitis B - positive titer, vaccine series, or declination accepted
    • Varicella - positive titer, vaccines, or documented history
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap - highly preferred for certain specialties but not required
  • Drug testing: 10 panel drug screen within 12 months of start
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/1 - 3/31)
  • COVID vaccination series preferred

Facility-Specific Training & Documents

  • Stroke Education Module and Attestation (required except for pediatric specialties and NICU)
  • CLABSI Prevention Training and Attestation
  • Preventing Pressure Injury Training and Attestation
  • Language Services Training and Attestation
  • CAUTI Education Training and Attestation (except PICU, NICU, Psychiatry/Behavioral Health)
  • Patient Transportation with Oxygen Education and Attestation
  • Suicide Risk and Environmental Assessment Training and Attestation
  • Pyxis ES MedStation Modules and Attestation
  • Baxter Pump Interoperability Training and Attestation
  • Patient Bedside Rounding Module and Attestation (except OR, Behavioral Health, Ambulatory, ER/ED)
  • Ventricular Assist Device Awareness Module and Attestation
  • AME Blood Administration Module (annual update required)
  • New Employee Orientation Module (copy required by end of start date)
  • 21st Century Cures Act Module and Attestation (required for RN except Home Health)
  • ED Handbook (for ED/ER RNs only)
  • eCart Training Module (required for all RNs except Pediatric, Periop/OR, Outpatient, Case Managers, Home Health)
  • Chaperone Policy Training and Attestation (required for RNs and Allied Health)

Employment History & Documentation

  • 7-year work history with no gaps greater than 90 days
  • Work history verification for last 7 years (attestations not accepted)
  • Skills checklist within 12 months of start
  • Attestation of prior radiation exposure (if applicable to certain tech roles)

This position is ideal for experienced cardiac ICU nurses with trauma center experience who are comfortable in a high acuity environment and meet the certification and competency requirements listed above.
