Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Opportunity
Location: Indianapolis, Indiana
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Details
- Specialty: Registered Nurse
- Employment Type: Travel/Contract
- Weekend Requirement: Must be flexible; expected to work 50% of weekends during the contract.
- Floating: Refusal to float may result in contract termination. Nurses may be required to float between Med-Surg, PCU, and ICU units.
- Precepting: Travel nurses must agree to potentially precept or have students shadow them.
- Locals: Local candidates are not accepted.
- First Time Travelers: Accepted.
- Charge Nurse: May be required to cover charge nurse duties with training provided.
- Staffing Ratios: Typically 1:3-4, rarely 1:5 during emergencies.
- Unit Patient Types: CVAs, hydrocephalus, brain tumors/resections, seizures, TBIs, trauma cases (shootings, stabbings, MVCs, falls), GI surgeries, large wound care.
- Specialty Experience Required: Minimum 2 years in specialty (Telemetry, Neuro experience, drip management).
- Preferred Experience: Conscious sedation and Level 1 trauma experience.
- Indiana RN Restriction: Effective 11/30/2024, Indiana RNs are generally not allowed to work at these facilities except for Periop/OR, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers (including ENDO, IR RN, PACU, Cath Lab RN, SDS).
Required Certifications
- ACLS (AHA or RQI accepted)
- BLS (AHA or RQI accepted)
- NIH Stroke Certification
- Additional certifications may be required depending on unit (e.g., PALS, NRP, CHEMO, TNCC, EFM)
Required Documents & Compliance
- Valid Driver’s License or Passport (clear copy)
- Background Check (within 90 days) including 7-year history, SSN trace, criminal, sex offender, FACIS Level III, education verification
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks (within 30 days)
- Official Transcript or Diploma (clear copy)
- Education Verification (may be pending at start)
- Physical Exam (within 12 months)
- Fit Mask Test (within 12 months) with approved respirators (3M N95 models, Honeywell N95, or facility-approved PAPR)
- Immunizations and Titers:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (preferred)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray (within 1 year)
- Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; declinations/exemptions not accepted
- Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination
- Seasonal Flu Vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption (required during flu season)
- Drug Testing: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months (no instant tests)
- Color Blind Exam (Ishihara or equivalent, 100% minimum score)
- References: Minimum 2 from recent employment with supervisory titles, verified within 2 years
- Employment Application: Current with full work history and explanations for gaps over 30 days
- Skills Checklist: Completed within 12 months and annually thereafter
- Competency Exams: Medication/Pharmacology and unit competency exams required
Additional Notes
- Call-in shifts must be made up during the pay period or added to the end of the contract depending on FTE status.
- IU Health is a teaching facility; travel nurses should be comfortable with educational roles.
- On-site Fit Testing is limited and only available as a last resort at certain campuses.
- Mandatory completion of facility-specific orientation modules and compliance forms prior to start.
- Prior travel experience is not required for this position.
This opportunity is ideal for experienced Registered Nurses with neuro and telemetry skills who are flexible with floating and weekend shifts, and comfortable working in a teaching hospital environment.
