Experience Requirements

  • Minimum Specialty Experience: 2 years nursing experience (highest required)
  • Trauma Level I experience: Required
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not required (First Time Travelers Accepted)
  • Locals: Not accepted

Work Requirements

  • Must be flexible with weekend shifts; expected to work 50% of weekends during contract
  • Refusal to float may result in contract termination
  • Floating to different levels of care (Med-Surg, PCU, ICU) may be required
  • Possibility of precepting students or being assigned students to shadow
  • Charge nurse responsibilities may be required with training and resources provided

Required Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA or RQI accepted (required)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - Preferred
  • Other certifications may be required depending on unit (e.g., TNCC, PALS, NRP, CHEMO, NIH Stroke Certification) - verify per unit

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Valid RN license (Indiana license verification required)
  • Background checks including 7-year work/living history, criminal, sex offender, FACIS Level III, education verification
  • Physical exam within 12 months of start
  • Fit mask test within 12 months (specific approved respirators required)
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months
  • Immunizations and titers:
    • Rubeola (Measles): Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted
    • Mumps: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted
    • Rubella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted
    • Varicella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted; history not accepted
    • Hepatitis B: Series, titer, or signed declination required
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap: Preferred but not required
    • Flu vaccination/documentation required during flu season (9/30 - 3/31); no declinations accepted
  • TB testing within 1 year (PPD, QuantiFERON, or T-SPOT) with chest x-ray if positive
  • Competency exams including medication/pharmacology and unit competency exam
  • Color blind testing (Ishihara or equivalent) with 100% minimum score
  • References: Minimum 2 from recent employment with supervisory titles, verified within 2 years
  • Employment application covering 7 years with explanations for gaps over 30 days
  • Skills checklist within 12 months, updated annually

Additional Notes

  • IU Health will not allow Indiana RN license holders to work at their facilities effective 11/30/2024, except for Periop/OR RN’s, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers (including ENDO, IR RN, PACU, Cath Lab RN, SDS)
  • Call-in shifts must be made up or added to end of contract depending on FTE status
  • Various facility-specific orientation, compliance, and safety modules must be completed prior to start, including a mandatory 22-module RRT training for Respiratory Therapists (if applicable)
  • On-site fit testing is limited and must be documented if done; PAPR use requires prior approval except at Methodist and University campuses where it is automatically approved

This position is ideal for a Registered Nurse with cardiovascular PCU experience, trauma level I background, and flexibility for weekend and floating assignments, seeking a travel contract in a teaching hospital environment.
