Unit Information
- Ortho/Trauma Med/Surg unit
- Approximately 20% ortho patients (hip and knee surgeries) collaborating with ortho team for 24-48 hours post-op
- Trauma population includes motor vehicle accidents, shootings, stabbings, falls, emergent surgeries, and ICU transfers with many drains and tubes
- High acuity, fast-paced environment requiring strong teamwork and communication skills
- Staffing ratios: 1:5-6
Work Requirements
- Must be flexible with weekend shifts; expected to work 50% of weekends during the contract
- Possibility of precepting students or being assigned students to shadow during assignment
- Floating may be required to different levels of care (Med-Surg, PCU, ICU) with resources provided
- Charge nurse responsibilities may be required depending on operational needs, with training provided
- Must have Indiana or Compact RN license in hand or have submitted fingerprint application package
Experience & Certifications
- Minimum 2 years of Registered Nurse experience required
- BCLS and ACLS certifications preferred
- Other certifications that may be required depending on unit: PALS, NRP, CHEMO, TNCC, EFM, NIH Stroke Certification
- Medication Test/Pharmacology competency exam and unit competency exam required
- Color Blind Testing (Ishihara exam or equivalent) required with minimum 100% score
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Valid Driver’s License or Passport (clear copy)
- Background checks including 7-year history, SSN trace, criminal, sex offender, FACIS Level III, education verification
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start
- Official transcript or diploma required (may be pending at start)
- Physical exam within 12 months of start date
- Fit mask test within 12 months of start (specific respirators approved)
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months
- Immunizations and titers required:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (preferred but not required)
- TB test (PPD, QuantiFERON, or T-SPOT) within 1 year
- Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: positive titer or 2 vaccines required, no declinations accepted
- Varicella: positive titer or 2 vaccines required, no declinations accepted
- Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination required
- Flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required for flu season (9/30 - 3/31), no declinations accepted
- TB Questionnaire updated annually
- References: Minimum 2 from recent employment within 2 years, must be from charge, manager, supervisor, or above
- Employment application current with explanations for gaps of 30+ days
- Skills checklist required within 12 months and annually
- Completion of facility-specific orientation, compliance, confidentiality, and policy forms required (time sensitive)
- Mandatory completion of 22 RRT modules for Respiratory Therapists (if applicable) prior to orientation
Additional Notes
- IU Health University and Methodist are teaching facilities; travel nurses must agree to precepting or student shadowing
- IU Health will not allow Indiana RNs to work at their facilities effective 11/30/2024, except for Periop/OR, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers (including ENDO, IR RN, PACU, Cath Lab RN, SDS) who are exempt from this rule
- Call-in shifts must be made up during the pay period or added to the end of the contract depending on FTE status
This position is suited for experienced Registered Nurses comfortable with high acuity ortho/trauma med/surg care, flexible scheduling including weekends, and willing to participate in teaching and floating as needed.
