Labor & Delivery Nurse Opportunity - Yuma, Arizona

Position Details

  • Specialty: Labor & Delivery (L&D)
  • Location: Yuma, Arizona
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks
  • Start Date: February 9 (not flexible)
  • Shift Times: 6:45 AM - 7:15 PM (day and night shifts)
  • Weekend Requirement: 3 weekend shifts per 4-week schedule
    • Night shifts: Friday/Saturday
    • Day shifts: Saturday/Sunday
  • Holiday Requirement: Assigned 2 out of 3 holidays (including eve/day); on-call as desired but not mandatory
  • Call Requirement: Low census on-call

Unit Information

  • Department: Labor and Delivery
  • Beds:
    • L&D Beds: 9
    • OR Suites for C-Sections: 2
    • Triage Beds: 7
  • Birth Volume: Average 9 births/day, 250/month, 3000/year
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: Typically 1:1 or 1:2 (2 patients common)
  • Support Staff:
    • Charge Nurse on each shift (free charge)
    • OB Techs (nurse aides/surgical techs)
    • OB/Neonatologist in-house 24/7
    • Tele/Monitor Techs on adult side; OB RNs do not read telemetry
  • Equipment:
    • EFM System: CPN Centricity
    • Respiratory Therapy Equipment: BVM for neonates, T-Piece resuscitator

Required Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
  • AWHONN Intermediate or Advanced Fetal Monitoring

Experience & Skills Required

  • Must be able to perform vaginal exams (note: teaching facility experience may have less skill in this area)
  • Skilled in:
    • Scalp electrodes
    • Circulating in C-sections
    • Newborn transitions
    • Assisting anesthesiology
    • IV starts and blood draws
    • APGAR scoring
    • Postpartum hemorrhage control (SIM lab training available)
    • Epidurals
    • Amnio infusion
  • Preferred: Experience with "spinning babies" technique
  • RNs are required to titrate drips including magnesium, Pitocin, insulin, and blood products
  • Must be prepared to care for antepartum patients and newborns for up to two hours post-delivery
  • Floating assignments may include NICU, Pediatrics, Women's services, MedSurg, ICU, or RDU with appropriate patient assignments

Patient Population & Other Notes

  • Common patient diagnoses:
    • Pregnancies 28 weeks and above
    • Hypertension
    • 7-10% no prenatal care
    • High percentage of Spanish-speaking patients (Spanish language skills highly beneficial)
  • Water birth knowledge is a plus but not required
  • Scrubs provided by hospital
  • Orientation includes:
    • One unit-specific orientation (NEO)
    • One clinical education/EPIC training day
