- Patient Population: Adults and Geriatrics
- Patient Diagnoses:
- Surgical Oncology: breast, thyroid, melanoma
- Hepatobiliary cancers: liver, pancreas, spleen, biliary tract, neuroendocrine
- Colorectal cancers: colon, rectal
- Plastics: reconstructive breast cancer or sarcoma
Unit and Work Environment
- Mixed acuity unit caring for PCU and Med Surg patients
- Very busy surgical floor
- Staffing ratios goal: 1:4 (can be 1:5)
- Weekends variable based on unit needs
- No set/blocked scheduling; self-scheduling requests submitted for final schedule balancing
- Orientation:
- Week 1: Monday-Friday day shift orientation
- Week 2: 36 hours on-unit orientation with preceptor
Experience Requirements
- Minimum Specialty Experience: 2 years Registered Nurse experience (highest requirement)
- Prior Travel Experience: Not explicitly required
Certifications Required
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
Certifications Preferred
- ONS Chemo (Oncology Nursing Society Chemotherapy Certification)
Skills and Procedures
- Chemotherapy administration
- Blood transfusions
- IV antibiotics
- Management of oncologic emergencies including cytokine release syndrome
- Insulin and heparin drips
- Heavy focus on infection prevention protocols and patient fall prevention
- Computerized charting using EPIC
Compliance and Background Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including FBI and BCI fingerprinting
- Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG monitoring
- Education accreditation verification from recognized nursing accrediting bodies (CCNE, ACEN, NLN CNEA, CASN)
- Ohio BCI & FBI fingerprinting required with specific code (3701.881)
- Pending background check attestation allowed if fingerprint results are pending
- Drug testing: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (no pending drug screens allowed)
- Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease
- Immunizations and health documents required:
- Tdap vaccine (adult dose)
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
- TB questionnaire
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccines or positive titers
- Hepatitis B titer or vaccine series (declination acceptable)
- Varicella vaccines or positive titer (medical exemptions reviewed)
- Seasonal flu vaccine or declination (mask required if declined during flu season)
- COVID vaccination not required but strongly recommended
Additional Requirements
- 2 professional references required (at least one from a manager or formal leadership)
- Employment application and skills checklist required
- Unit-specific competency exams including medication/pharmacology and dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam (EKG exam required annually)
- Annual orientation safety manual acknowledgement
- State license verification and NURSYS verification required within 30 days of start
- Fraud, Waste, and Abuse training certificate required prior to start and updated annually
- Dress code and hand hygiene policy acknowledgment required
This position is ideal for experienced Registered Nurses with oncology and surgical care experience who are comfortable working night shifts in a fast-paced, mixed acuity PCU/Med Surg environment. The role requires strong clinical skills, certifications, and compliance with extensive background and health documentation protocols.
