Telemetry Nurse (2 South Unit) - Martinsburg, West Virginia

Contract Length

• 13 weeks

Unit Overview

• 20-bed telemetry unit, all private rooms
• Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:5 for telemetry patients
• Patient census varies widely (1-10 admissions/discharges per day)
• Common patient types: telemetry monitoring, post-catheterization, medical/surgical with telemetry needs, respiratory difficulties
• Stepdown unit currently not active; only telemetry patients at this time

Required Certifications and Experience

• Registered Nurse (RN) with 5+ years of experience
• Required certifications: BLS (AHA), ACLS (AHA), NIHSS
• At least 1 year of prior travel nursing experience required
• Valid driver’s license required

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with EPIC electronic health record system preferred

Clinical Responsibilities

• Cardiac monitoring: understanding and verifying telemetry strips; 10 rooms with hardwired monitors, others with portable telemetry
• Point of Care Testing (POCT): blood sugar testing using AccuChek glucometer
• Medication administration including reconstitution of antibiotics and titration of heparin and diltiazem
• IV placement and lab draws from central lines as ordered
• Collaboration with unit-based pharmacist (available weekdays 7a-3p) and 24/7 pharmacy coverage
• Respiratory therapy support available 24/7; nurses may administer nebulizers/breathing treatments (no ventilators on unit)
• Physician coverage by hospitalists 24/7

Staffing and Support

• 2 Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) per 20 beds assisting with ambulation, vital signs, feeding, bathing, and documentation
• Designated charge nurse present when fully staffed
• Monitor technicians located on 6th floor monitor telemetry and notify nurses of issues

Orientation

• 3-day orientation: education modules, shadowing, then independent practice
• Badge and parking pass issued on first day

Work Schedule

• 12-hour shifts: Day (7:00 AM - 7:30 PM) or Night (7:00 PM - 7:30 AM)
• Nurses hired for specific shifts but may pick up additional shifts on opposite schedule voluntarily
• Block scheduling and self-scheduling allowed for travelers
• No on-call required

Additional Work Details

• Floating may occur to comparable or lower acuity units (telemetry or med/surg)
• Occasional assistance with boarded patients in ED or ICU
• Weekend requirement: every other weekend (day shift covers Sat/Sun; night shift covers Fri/Sat)
• Holiday coverage: every other major holiday (Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s)
• Dress code: Navy blue scrubs provided by nurse

Other Notes

• Travelers may be asked to precept or serve as charge nurse based on comfort level; participation is voluntary and discussed beforehand
• Call-off requires minimum 2-hour notice to hospital supervisor
