Job Opportunity: PCU Registered Nurse (RN) - Travel/Contract

Location: Hays, Kansas
Facility Type: Acute Care Hospital, Level 3 Trauma
Staffed Beds: 149
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Specialty: Progressive Care Unit (PCU) Registered Nurse
  • Hours: 36 or 48 hours per week
  • Patient Ratios: 1:4-5
  • Weekend Requirement: Weekend rotation required
  • On-call: Not required
  • Floating: Yes, floating within scope to meet facility needs
  • Block Scheduling: No block scheduling greater than 3 or 4 shifts
  • Locals Accepted: Within 60-mile radius
  • Pending License: Not accepted
  • Guaranteed Hours: 40 hours/week (8 or 10 hour shifts)
  • Scrub Color: Any color allowed; OR/L&D/Cath Lab scrubs provided
  • Charting System: Meditech experience required

Experience & Certifications

  • Required Specialty Experience: Minimum of 1 year experience (IV Start required)
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not explicitly required
  • First-timers Accepted: Yes

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) – Required for PCU RNs
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) – Required for all units
  • Additional Preferred/Required Certifications (depending on unit):
    • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) – as required
    • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Procedure) – as required
    • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) – check unit description
    • EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring) – for Labor & Delivery RNs
    • STABLE – for NICU RNs
    • NIH Stroke Certification – required for ICU, PCU, Med Surg, Ortho/BJ&S, Rehab

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Background Checks:

    • 7-year criminal background check within 1 year of start, updated annually
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
    • Education verification of highest degree earned
  • Health Requirements:

    • Physical exam within last 12 months
    • Current Tdap vaccine (within last 10 years)
    • Negative TB test (Quantiferon Gold preferred) within 1 year, updated annually
    • Required vaccinations or documented immunity for MMR, Varicella, Hepatitis B, Influenza, Rubella, Rubeola, Mumps
    • Negative 13-panel drug test within 30 days of start (instant tests not accepted)
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required annually
  • Licensure:

    • Primary source verification of state license required
    • NURSYS verification required for all RNs
  • Orientation & Competency:

    • Pass/fail testing on EKG/Medication and nursing competencies during orientation
    • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam as applicable
    • Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) training required for some specialties (check unit)
    • Orientation includes facility-specific safety manual acknowledgement and HIPAA compliance

  • Orientation is held on-site; business casual attire recommended (scrubs allowed if required for position)

  • Facility follows a 60-mile radius rule for locals

This position is suitable for RNs with at least 1 year of PCU or related experience, who hold current ACLS and BLS certifications, and are comfortable working weekend rotations and floating within their scope. First-time travel nurses are welcome to apply.
