Job Opportunity: Medical Surgical Registered Nurse (RN)

Location: Springfield, Illinois
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Specialty: Medical Surgical Registered Nurse (Med Surg RN)
  • Shift: 3x12 hour day shifts (06:45 AM - 07:15 PM), with option for 4x12 hour shifts if preferred
  • Average Daily Census: 21 patients
  • Weekend Requirement: Work every other weekend
  • Years of Experience Required: Minimum 1 year in specialty
  • First-time Travelers: Accepted
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not explicitly required
  • Locals Accepted: Yes, no radius restrictions
  • License Requirement: Active Illinois RN license required (no pending licenses accepted)
  • On-call: Not required
  • Floating: Will float within scope as needed
  • Block Scheduling: Open to discussion with manager
  • Return to Office (RTO) Restrictions: Ideally no more than 5 days

    • Accessing ports

    • Peripheral line care/management

  • Medication Skills:
    • Heparin
    • Insulin
    • PCA (Patient Controlled Analgesia)
  • Neurological/Psychiatric Experience: CVA (stroke) patients
  • Respiratory Skills:
    • Chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac)
    • CPAP/BiPAP
    • High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC)
    • Interpretation of ABGs
    • Nasal cannula
    • Non-invasive airway management
    • Oral suctioning
    • Oxygen face masks
    • Portable oxygen tank
    • Tracheostomy management
  • Professional Knowledge:
    • Isolation precautions
    • Wound care and wound vac management
  • Preferred Experience:
    • Teaching hospital experience
    • Community hospital experience
    • Previous charge nurse experience

Compliance and Documentation Requirements

  • Valid/current US Driver’s License or State ID
  • Background checks covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
  • Education verification (degree or transcript)
  • State-specific criminal and offender registry searches as required by Illinois
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, including labs
  • Fit mask test (specific mask types required)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
  • Immunizations or proof of immunity for:
    • Measles (Rubeola)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis B
    • Varicella
  • 9-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
  • Flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually
  • Competency exam and skills checklist required for clinical candidates
  • Badge photo submission within one week of signing contract
  • Review and sign facility-specific code of conduct and other required documents

Additional Notes

  • Scrub color: Any solid color
  • No radius restrictions for locals
  • Candidates must have an active Illinois RN license before applying
  • Facility may call off up to 36 hours per 13-week assignment without pay for those hours
  • Candidates may be required to float within their scope of practice

This position is suitable for RNs with at least 1 year of Med Surg experience who are comfortable working in a fast-paced, acute care, Level I trauma center environment with a variety of complex patient care needs.
