Job Opportunity: Medical Technologist (Laboratory)

Location: Conyers, Georgia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

  • Position: Lead Medical Technologist (Lead Tech) with Blood Bank experience
  • Specialty: Laboratory (Lead Blood Bank experience required; generalist experience not sufficient)
  • Unit Procedures: Hematology, Chemistry, Coagulation, Urinalysis
  • Schedule: Monday to Friday, no weekends required
  • Call: None
  • Floating: Within facility/scope of practice as needed

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum Specialty Experience: 2 years
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not required (first-time travelers accepted)

Assignment Details

  • Holiday Work: If 1 major holiday falls during assignment, traveler expected to work it. If 2 holidays, work both. If 3 holidays, work 2 of them.
  • Major Holidays Include: Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving/Black Friday, Christmas Eve/Day, New Year’s Eve/Day
  • Orientation: Number of non-billable orientation hours depends on contract length (e.g., 8 hours for 8-week assignment)
  • Compliance: Full compliance required to start on time; delays result in 2-week pushback due to bi-weekly orientation schedule
  • Locals: Local candidates accepted at same rate

Required Certifications & Verifications

  • Blood Bank Lead Tech experience mandatory
  • State License: Must be licensed by the State of Georgia (if applicable)
  • Tech Certification: Allied Annual License Verification within 30 days prior to start (if applicable)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support): AHA or ARC accepted (check specialty requirements)
  • ACLS, PALS, NRP, NIH Stroke Certification: Refer to specialty-specific requirements (mostly for RN/RRT roles)
  • Other Certifications: Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) course required within a few months of hire (non-expiring)
  • Competency Exams: Color Blind Testing (required for all candidates), Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam (for RNs/LVNs only), other competency exams as applicable

Health & Background Requirements

  • Background Check: Required within 30 days of start, including criminal, sex offender, education verification, etc.
  • Physical Exam: Required by agency within 1 year of start
  • TB Testing: Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 12 months; TB questionnaire required annually
  • Immunizations:
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella: 2 MMR vaccines or positive titer with boosters if needed
    • Varicella: 2 vaccines or positive titer with boosters if needed
    • Hepatitis B: Series, titer, or signed declination
    • Flu Vaccine: Required or declination during flu season (Nov 1 - Mar 31)
  • Drug Testing: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start; instant drug screen acceptable if needed

Additional Requirements

  • References: 2 clinical references required by agency
  • Skills Checklist: Updated within 12 months
  • Work History Verification: Verification of most recent employer required; can be pending at start with proof it is in process

Notes

  • This is a lead tech position requiring specific blood bank experience; generalist lab experience will not qualify.
  • Floating within the facility may be required as per scope of practice.
  • No weekend shifts or on-call required.
  • Orientation and compliance requirements are strict to ensure timely start.
