Job Opportunity: Pediatric Stepdown Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: New Haven, Connecticut
Facility Type: Short Term Acute Care, Level I Trauma Center

Position Details

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse - Pediatrics (Pediatric Stepdown Unit)
  • Patient Ratios: Average 1:4
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • Float Requirement: Yes
  • Guaranteed Hours: Yes
  • First-timers Accepted: Yes
  • Pending License Accepted: Yes (RTO greater than 7 days requires approval)

Experience Requirements

  • Years of Experience Required: 2 years in specialty
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not required

Certifications Required

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) (AHA or ARC)
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) - Not required for Pediatric Stepdown
  • Other certifications may be required depending on unit assignment; always verify unit-specific requirements.

Background Checks & Verifications

  • 7-year criminal background check (updated annually)
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start
  • Education verification including foreign equivalency evaluation if internationally educated
  • State license primary source verification within 30 days of start
  • NURSYS verification within 30 days of start

Competency Exams & Testing

  • Medication/Pharmacology Competency Exam (must score 85%)
  • Color Blind Testing (required for all candidates starting 8/2/2024 or later; must score 80%)
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam (not required for Pediatric Stepdown)

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 12 months of start
  • Fit mask test within 12 months of start (annual update required)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray documentation
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccination highly preferred for pediatric specialties (declination accepted)
  • Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or 2 MMR vaccines required; boosters may be required based on titer results
  • Hepatitis B: Positive titer, vaccine series, or declination accepted
  • Varicella: Positive titer, 2 vaccines, or documented history; boosters may be required
  • 10 Panel Drug Screen within 12 months of start
  • Seasonal Flu Vaccination or medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/1 - 3/31)
  • COVID vaccination series preferred

Facility-Specific Training & Compliance

  • Stroke Education (not required for Pediatric specialties)
  • CLABSI Prevention for Adult and Pediatric Training
  • Preventing Pressure Injury Training
  • Language Services Training
  • CAUTI Education Training (not required for PICU, NICU, Psychiatry/Behavioral Health)
  • Patient Transportation with Oxygen Education
  • Suicide Risk and Environmental Assessment Training
  • Pyxis ES MedStation Modules (not required for some campuses)
  • Baxter Pump Interoperability Training
  • Patient Bedside Rounding (except OR, Behavioral Health, Ambulatory, ER/ED)
  • Ventricular Assist Device Awareness (not required for Pediatric Stepdown)
  • AME Blood Administration Module (not required for Behavioral Health, Case Managers, Home Health)
  • New Employee Orientation Module
  • 21st Century Cures Act Module (required for RN except Home Health)
  • ED Handbook (not required for Pediatric Stepdown)
  • eCart Training Module (not required for Pediatric, Periop/OR, Outpatient, Case Managers, Home Health)
  • Chaperone Policy Training
  • EPIC Testing (optional but highly encouraged for those with Epic experience)
  • Vaccination Booster Medical Exemption process available

Employment History & Documentation

  • 7-year work history with no gaps greater than 90 days
  • Work history verification required for all start dates on/after 8/2/2024
  • Skills checklist required within 12 months of start
  • Attestation of prior radiation exposure required for certain tech and specialty roles (not applicable for Pediatric Stepdown RN)

This position offers a comprehensive orientation and training program to ensure compliance with facility standards and patient safety protocols. The role requires flexibility with weekend shifts and floating to other units as needed.
