Job Opportunity: Neuro ICU Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)
Location: Indianapolis, Indiana

Job Description & Requirements
- Position Type: Travel/Contract (Locals not accepted)
- Weekend Requirement: Must be flexible and able to work 50% of weekends during the contract.
- Precepting: Candidates must agree to the possibility of precepting and/or having students shadow them.
- Licensing: Must have Indiana RN or Compact license in hand or have submitted fingerprint application package.
- Call-In Policy:
- If a traveler calls in for a contracted shift, they must make up the day during the pay period if 0.9 FTE.
- If unable to make up during the pay period, the shift will be added at the end of the contract.
- For 1.2 FTE, call-in shifts are added to the end of the contract.
- Charge Nurse: May be required to cover charge nurse responsibilities with training and resources provided.
- Floating: May be expected to float to different levels of care (Med-Surg, PCU, ICU) with resources provided.
- Staffing Ratios: 1:2-3
- Unit Info: Neuro Critical Care Unit caring for medical, surgical, and trauma ICU patients.
Experience & Skills Required
- Minimum Specialty Experience: 3 years
- Required Skillset:
- Neuro Intensive Care Unit experience
- Level 1 Trauma experience
- Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
- Intracranial Pressure (ICP) management
- IV starts
- Certifications Required:
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification (must have in hand)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support)
- Prior Travel Experience: Not explicitly required
Important Notes
- IU Health will not allow Indiana RNs to work at their facilities effective 11/30/2024, except for Perioperative/OR RNs, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers.
- On-site PAPR (Powered Air Purifying Respirator) is automatically approved at Methodist and University hospitals.
Required Documentation & Compliance
- Licenses & Certifications:
- Valid Indiana RN or Compact license verification within 30 days of start
- NIH Stroke Certification
- ACLS, BCLS certifications (AHA or RQI accepted)
- Background Checks:
- Must include 7 years of residence/work history, SSN trace, county/state/national criminal checks, sex offender registry, FACIS Level III
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start
- Health Documents:
- Physical exam within 12 months of start
- Fit mask test within 12 months (specific approved respirators required)
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months
- Immunizations and titers:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (preferred but not required)
- TB test (PPD, QuantiFERON, or T-SPOT) within 1 year
- Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted
- Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination required
- Varicella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted
- Seasonal Flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required for 2025-26 season
- Competency Exams:
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exam
- Unit competency exam
- Color blind testing (Ishihara or equivalent)
- References & Employment History:
- Minimum 2 references from recent employment verified within 2 years
- Current employment application with explanation of any gaps over 30 days
- Skills checklist within 12 months, completed annually
- Facility Specific Requirements:
- Completion of various IU Health compliance, confidentiality, orientation, and policy forms (time sensitive)
- Mandatory completion of 22 RRT modules for Respiratory Therapists (if applicable)
