Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (PCU Neuroscience)

Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Unit: 9E PCU Neuroscience Main Hospital
  • Shift: 3x12 hour night shifts (7:00 PM - 7:30 AM), including holidays as needed
  • Patient Ratios: 1:3 to 1:4 depending on acuity
  • Weekend Requirement: 4-5 weekend shifts in a 4-week period as needed
  • On-Call: No on-call requirements
  • Floating: Clinician may float within scope to meet facility needs
  • Block Scheduling: Possible with manager approval, dependent on unit needs
  • Locals: Accepted within 60 miles radius on a case-by-case basis

Experience & Licensure Requirements

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse with PCU/Stepdown experience
  • Years of Experience Required: Minimum 1 year
  • First-Time Travelers: Accepted
  • Licenses: South Carolina RN license or Multi-State/Compact RN license required

Certifications Required

  • BLS: American Heart Association (AHA) only
  • ACLS: AHA only (required for PCU and other adult critical care units)
  • NIH Stroke Certification: Required for ER and PCU units
  • Additional Certifications:
    • PALS (if working in pediatric units)
    • TNCC (as required, not required for ER RNs)
    • Other certifications as applicable to unit and role

Scheduling & Attendance Policies

  • Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks
  • Travelers follow the same attendance policies as permanent staff
  • Weekend callouts require makeup shifts within 7-10 days
  • Holiday callouts require a doctor’s note and are considered for cancellation

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Background Checks:
    • Annual background check covering last 7 years of residence/employment
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
  • Education Verification: Required (diploma/transcripts accepted as placeholder)
  • Licensure Verification: Primary source verification required; SC RN license must be active and unencumbered
  • NURSYS Verification: Required for all RNs
  • Drug Testing: 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start (no instant tests)
  • Physical Exam: Initial and annual physical exam attesting ability to meet job demands
  • Fit Mask Test: N95 fit test within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually
  • Immunizations & Health Requirements:
    • Tdap within 10 years or declination form
    • Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days or proof of prior positive with chest x-ray
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: Positive titers or vaccination series with boosters as needed
    • Hepatitis B: Titer, vaccine series, or declination required
    • Seasonal Flu Vaccine: Required during flu season (Aug 1 - Apr 30), medical/religious exemptions accepted but no declinations
    • COVID-19 Vaccines: Not required but highly preferred; declination form required if not vaccinated
  • Competency Exams: Medication/pharmacology and unit-specific competency exams required
  • Photo for Badge: Passport-style photo with solid light background, business casual attire, no hats or sunglasses

Additional Notes

  • Travelers may be assigned to emergency response teams during hurricane season (June-November), especially August and September.
  • Locals accepted but may be offered at a reduced rate.
  • Facility requires completion of orientation modules prior to start; failure to complete may result in being sent home.
  • Radiation badges required for certain specialties but not for PCU RNs.

Prior Travel Experience
