Job Opportunity: Certified Surgical First Assistant (Travel/Contract)
Location: Washington, District of Columbia
Specialty: Surgical Services
Contract Length: 13 weeks (approximately 3 months)
Shift: 40 hours per week, Day shift 06:30 - 17:00
Call Requirement: Up to 1 weekend of call per six-week schedule (Saturday and Sunday 06:30 - 15:00)
Job Description
- Role: OR Surgical Assistant First Assist
- Skills Required:
- Acute Inpatient OR and Outpatient OR experience
- Surgical First Assist skills including Electrosurgical units
- Surgery Case Types:
- Bariatrics
- Orthopedics/Spine
- Orthopedics/Total Joints
- Robotics
- Thoracic
- Ankle fusion
- Trauma
- Urology
- Endocrine Surgery
Licensure & Certifications
- Must have District of Columbia State License in hand upon application
- Required Certifications:
- BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA or ARC approved
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - review required
- Other certifications as required by unit (e.g., PALS, NRP, TNCC) depending on assignment
- Certified OR Tech / Certified Surgical Tech (NBSTSA or NCCT preferred)
- Annual requirements:
- Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement
- Medication/Pharmacology Competency Exam (score 80% or higher)
- Competency Exams relevant to specialty/unit
- Color Blind Testing (online or in-person)
- EKG/Dysrhythmia Competency Exam for applicable units (RN only)

Background & Compliance Requirements
- Criminal Background Check within 90 days of start, covering all locations lived/worked/schooled in past 7 years
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks prior to start and monthly thereafter
- Education Verification for highest degree required by position
- Drug Screen within 90 days of start (excluding marijuana), updated annually
- Physical Exam confirming ability to perform work without accommodations and free from communicable disease
- Immunizations and health documentation required:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years preferred)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray (within 1 year, updated annually)
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) documentation or titers
- Hepatitis B titer, series, or signed declination
- Varicella documentation or titer
- Seasonal Flu Vaccination or approved exemption (required during flu season)
Documentation & Onboarding
- Complete 7 years of work history with no gaps, including education and license information
- Two positive supervisory references supporting at least 2 years of experience within the last 3 years
- Skills checklist required prior to start and updated annually
- Facility-specific modules (SITELS) must be completed before hire date
- Photo for badge with specific requirements (clear, centered, no glare, solid background)
Additional Notes
- Valid driver's license required if driving is an essential job function
- Drug screen and background check attestations completed by credentialing staff
- Candidate must be able to complete all required documentation and certifications prior to start date
This position is suitable for surgical first assistants with acute inpatient and outpatient OR experience, who hold a DC license and meet the certification and compliance requirements. First-time travel candidates may be considered with unit approval.
