Description

Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (RN) - PICU

Location: Morgantown, West Virginia
Specialty: PICU (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit)
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Experience & Certification Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years of PICU experience (hard requirement)
  • BLS Certification
  • PALS Certification
  • Fully COVID vaccinated (2 Moderna/Pfizer shots or 1 J&J shot) or approved medical/religious exemption

Unit Details

  • Unit: PICU (Cost Center 034)
  • Beds: 20 total beds, average daily census ~15
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios:
    • ICU: 1:1 to 1:2
    • Stepdown: 1:3
  • Common patient diagnoses: Congenital heart conditions, DKA, respiratory issues, neurosurgery, tracheostomies, ventilator care, G-tubes
  • Nurse responsibilities:
    • Titrate sedation drips (Fentanyl, Versed, Precedex) and vasoactive drugs per physician orders
    • Charge nurse duties depending on staffing
  • Support staff:
    • Nurse aides present (1-2 during day, 1 at night) assisting with feeding, FSBS, equipment, and admissions
    • Pediatrician, residents, and APPs available 24/7 on unit
    • Respiratory therapists manage vents, CPAP, BiPAP
  • Monitoring: Telemetry monitored off-unit; central monitors at ICU and stepdown desks; strips read remotely

Scheduling & Work Environment

  • Shifts: 12-hour shifts, rotating day (7a-7p) and night (7p-7a)
  • Self-scheduling with possibility for block scheduling
  • Weekend requirement: Minimum 2 weekends per 4-week schedule (Fri/Sat/Sun all considered weekend shifts)
  • Holiday work required, integrated into permanent staff holiday rotation
  • No call or standby requirement
  • Floating required within children’s units (Labor & Delivery, NICU, Acute Pediatrics) with normal patient ratios
  • Dress code: Royal blue scrubs with kid-friendly tops (no t-shirts)

Orientation & Onboarding

  • EPIC training
  • New Staff Orientation (NSO)
  • Competencies and equipment review with clinical preceptor
  • 3 shifts in PICU with a mentor

Additional Notes

  • Driver’s license address must be outside 50 miles from the facility
  • Previous permanent candidates must have been gone for 2 years before reapplying
  • Previous travelers must have been gone for 2 years after completing at least 1 full year
  • Travel teams must be submitted together
  • Only 2 candidates submitted per opening at a time
