Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - Cardiac Stepdown
Location: New Haven, Connecticut
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
- Position: RN Cardiac Stepdown
- Patient Ratios: Average 1:4 (days and nights)
- Experience Required: Minimum 2 years in specialty
- First-time travelers accepted
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- On-call: Not required
- Floating: Yes, within scope to meet facility needs
- Block scheduling: Not accommodated
- Pending license accepted
- Return to Office (RTO) restrictions: RTO greater than 7 days requires approval
- Guaranteed hours
Specialty Requirements
- Competent to care for pre/post cardiac procedures and cardiac surgery patients
- Experience with chest tubes and pacer wires
- Care for Medical/Surgical Cardiac Patients at both floor and stepdown levels
- Patient population includes cardiology, cardiothoracic, and vascular patients
- Telemetry trained
Certifications Required
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
Background and Compliance Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check required within 12 months of start, updated annually
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start
- Education verification required, including foreign equivalency for internationally educated RNs
- State license primary source verification required within 30 days of start
- NURSYS verification required within 30 days of start
Competency Exams and Training
- Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam (must score 85%) within 12 months of start
- Color Blind Testing (required for all candidates on/after 8/2/2024, must score 80%)
- Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam required for telemetry, MS/Tele, ER, ICU, Progressive Care, PACU, IR/Cath/EPEndo/GI units (not required for NICU or Behavioral Health)

- Stroke Education Module and Attestation (except Pediatric specialties and NICU)
- CLABSI Prevention Training for Adult and Pediatric patients
- Preventing Pressure Injury Training
- Language Services Training
- CAUTI Education Training (except PICU, NICU, Psychiatry/Behavioral Health)
- Patient Transportation with Oxygen Education
- Suicide Risk and Environmental Assessment Training
- Pyxis ES MedStation Modules
- Baxter Pump Interoperability Training
- Patient Bedside Rounding Module (except OR, Behavioral Health, Ambulatory, ER/ED)
- Ventricular Assist Device Awareness
- AME Blood Administration Module (except Case Managers and Behavioral Health/Psych and Home Health)
- New Employee Orientation Module
- 21st Century Cures Act Module (required for RN except Home Health)
- ED Handbook (for ED/ER RNs only)
- eCart Training Module (not required for Pediatric, Periop/OR, Outpatient, Case Managers, Home Health)
- Chaperone Policy Training
- EPIC Testing (optional but highly encouraged for those with EPIC experience)
- Vaccination Booster Medical Exemption process
Health and Immunization Requirements
- Physical Exam within 12 months of start
- Fit Mask Test within 12 months of start, updated annually (3M N95 preferred)
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccination highly preferred for Pediatric, Labor and Delivery, Postpartum (Tdap declination acceptable)
- Negative TB test or Chest X-Ray documentation required
- TB Questionnaire updated annually
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) vaccination or positive titer required; boosters may be required based on titer results
- Hepatitis B vaccination or positive titer or declination accepted (declination must be within 1 year)
- Varicella vaccination or positive titer required; boosters may be required
- 10 Panel Drug Screen within 12 months of start (rapid accepted)
- Seasonal Flu Vaccination or medical/religious exemption required during flu season (09/01 - 03/31); declinations not allowed
- COVID vaccination preferred
Employment History and Documentation
- 7-year work history with no gaps greater than 90 days required
- Work history verification for last 7 years required for all start dates on/after 8/2/2024
- Skills checklist required within 12 months of start
- Attestation of prior radiation exposure required for certain tech and specialty roles (not applicable for RN Cardiac Stepdown)
Additional Notes
- Telemetry and cardiac stepdown experience is essential
- Floating within scope expected
- Weekend work every other weekend required
- Pending license accepted, but state license verification must be completed within 30 days of start
- Prior travel experience is not explicitly required for this position
This position offers an opportunity to work in a Level I Trauma Center with a large acute care facility using Epic charting.
