Job Description

• Position: General Medical-Surgical Emergency Room Float RN at a Rural Critical Access Hospital
• Start Date: February only
• Experience Required: Emergency Room (ER) and Medical-Surgical (Med Surg) experience
• Patient Ratio: 1 nurse to 4-5 patients
• Electronic Medical Record (EMR) System: Meditech
• First-time travelers accepted
• Scrubs: Any color allowed

Required Certifications

• ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
• NIH Stroke Certification (annual requirement)

Preferred Certifications / Skills

• NIH Stroke Certification preferred
• Skills such as accessing ports, blood product administration, central line blood draws, peripheral line care/management, phlebotomy, PICC line management, heparin medication administration, CVA care, tracheostomy management, wound care/wound vac

Required Skills

• Interpret and manage dysrhythmias
• Telemetry monitoring on unit
• IV insulin protocols
• Colostomy and feeding tube care/management
• Starting IVs
• Insulin medication administration
• Oxygen delivery methods including nasal cannula, non-invasive airway management, oral suctioning, oxygen face mask, portable oxygen tank
• Isolation precautions

Experience Requirements

• Specialty: Registered Nurse with ER and Med Surg experience

• FACIS Level III Screening within 30 days of start
• State License Verification (Primary Source Verification)
• NURSYS Verification (for all RNs)
• References: 2 professional references within 2 years required for travel positions
• Performance Evaluations if worked over 1 year with the agency (collected internally)
• Skills Checklist updated annually for applicable units

Health and Safety Requirements

• Physical Exam: Physician statement within 30 days of start confirming ability to perform essential job functions
• N95 Fit Test: Required within 12 months of start; can be completed onsite during orientation if needed
• Immunizations and Titers:

  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (current within 10 years; required for Birth Center/NICU staff)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 12 months (or documentation if past positive)
  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer within 10 years or completed 2-dose vaccine series (boosters required if non-immune)
  • Hepatitis B: Positive titer, completed 3-dose series, or declination form
  • Varicella: Positive titer or completed 2-dose vaccine series
• Drug Testing: 10-panel drug screen including marijuana within 30 days of start (SAMHSA certified, reviewed by MRO; instant tests not accepted)
• Flu Vaccine or Declination required during flu season (Oct 1 – Mar 31); if declined, mask must be worn at all times
• COVID-19 Vaccine or Declination accepted; medical and religious exemptions accepted with declination form

Additional Information

• Mileage reviewed upon submittal (100-mile radius rule)
• Healthstream modules (~8 hours) required and must be completed prior to start
• Facility-specific documents including photo for badge required
