Travel Registered Nurse (Step Down Unit)

Location: Dayton, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Overview

  • Position on a Step Down (SD) / Progressive Care Unit (PCU) with a team nursing model trial (two nurses + PCT caring for a group of patients).
  • Patient ratios targeted at 1:4, can be up to 1:5-6.
  • Shift options: 36 or 48 hours per week. OT paid after 48 hours.
  • Patient population includes COPD, CHF, Pneumonia, Flu, Sepsis, Diabetic Ketoacidosis, Post Covid.
  • Care involves tele monitoring, drips, vents, trach care (no orally intubated patients), bipaps, high oxygen requirements, insulin drips, heparin, Cardizem, and other drips. Respiratory Therapist support available.
  • Navy blue scrubs required.

Experience & Requirements

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse with Step Down/PCU experience (ICU experience does NOT count toward SD/PCU experience).
  • Required Experience: Minimum 1.5 years in Step Down or PCU with some level 1 or 2 experience preferred.
  • Prior Travel Experience: Preferred but not required.
  • Must have ventilator experience.
  • Must have EPIC electronic health record experience.
  • Must have experience with ventilators and be able to work with tele monitoring and drips.
  • Must pass an online EKG tele competency assessment before starting.
  • BLS and ACLS certifications required; must be able to read and interpret EKG strips.
  • Nurses will be fitted for N95 masks prior to working on the unit unless PAPR is offered/needed.

Floating & Scheduling

  • Travelers will float at Premier's discretion, including to other campuses within 10-15 miles.
  • Must be available to work every other weekend and holidays.
  • Facility reserves the right to cancel shifts due to low census with notice.
  • Travelers are not eligible for employee incentives.

Certifications & Competencies Required

  • BLS (AHA)
  • ACLS (AHA)
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam (must pass within 3 attempts)
  • Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam (within 2 years)
  • NIH Stroke Certification (required within 12 months prior to start, updated annually)
  • Other certifications as applicable based on unit (e.g., PALS, NRP, TNCC, EFM) may be required depending on assignment.

Licensure & Documentation

  • Ohio RN license required (primary source verification).
  • NURSYS verification required.
  • Physical exam within 2 years indicating fitness to work.
  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray (annual update if past positive).
  • Drug screening (9 or 10 panel including marijuana) within 12 months prior to documentation due date.
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season.
  • Respiratory safety clearance within 1 year of start, renewed annually.
  • Background checks including 7-year criminal background, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG required.
  • References: 2 professional references within 2 years, including 1 manager/supervisor/charge RN.
  • Skills checklist updated within 1 year.
  • Employment application/resume required.

Additional Notes

  • Application must show Step Down/PCU experience with a 1:5 ratio in work history; ICU experience does not count.
  • Team nursing model may require flexibility in nursing roles.
  • Traveler will be first to float and may be assigned medically appropriate duties outside primary unit.
  • Must comply with all facility-specific health and safety requirements including respirator medical questionnaire and fit testing.
