Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - Operating Room (Travel/Contract)

Location: Newark, New Jersey
Contract Length: 13 weeks (approximately 3 months)

Job Details

  • Primary Unit: Operating Room (OR)
  • On-Call Requirements:
    • 1 weekend per month (Saturday/Sunday)
    • On call for 2 shifts per week (8 hours each)

Experience & Specialty Requirements

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse - Operating Room

  • Required Experience: Minimum 1.5 years in specialty

  • Types of Cases/Experience Required:

    • General surgery
    • Laparoscopic surgery
    • Gynecological surgery
    • Robotic surgery
    • Orthopedic/Neurosurgery
    • Vascular surgery
    • Pediatric surgery
  • Certifications:

    • BLS (Basic Life Support) - Required
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - Required
    • CNOR Certification - Preferred
    • Scrub experience highly preferred; will consider circulator role
  • Charting Systems: OR Manager (PICIS), EPIC

  • Scrub Provided

  • Prior Travel Experience: Not required (First-time travelers accepted)


Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Background Checks:

    • Criminal background check within 30 days of start
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG, and state-specific exclusions list checks within 30 days of start and for every contract renewal
    • Must include all aliases and locations worked/lived in past 7 years
    • No open cases allowed at start
    • Attestation required if background check is pending at start
  • Health & Immunization Requirements:

    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within required timeframes
    • Physical exam within the past 12 months, cleared to perform essential job functions and free of communicable disease
    • Drug screen within 30 days of start (10-panel urine test)
    • Seasonal influenza vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually
    • Required immunizations or proof of immunity: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B, Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap
    • Fit test and respiratory medical clearance required prior to start (on-site fit testing mandatory)
    • Latex allergy questionnaire if applicable
    • Color blindness exam if job tasks require color discrimination
  • Competency Exams & Testing:

    • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required within 72 hours of signing
    • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required for applicable units
    • Pass/fail testing for EKG and medication knowledge with remediation process if failed
    • Color blind testing within 1 year of start if applicable
  • References & Work History:

    • Two references within last 2 years (one managerial)
    • Employment application or resume with 7 years of work history
    • Work history verification required for New Jersey candidates (minimum 1 year prior to start)

Additional Requirements

  • Orientation & Training:
    • Annual education sign-off required prior to start and updated annually
    • Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB) certification required for ER, Pediatric ER, and Behavioral Health RNs (online and in-person portions)
    • Vendor medical clearance form required for candidates with history of positive TB
    • Facility-specific policies such as floating policy must be completed for every new assignment

Summary

This is a 13-week travel contract for a Registered Nurse in the Operating Room in Newark, NJ. The role requires at least 1.5 years of OR nursing experience with exposure to a variety of surgical specialties. BLS and ACLS certifications are mandatory, with CNOR preferred. Scrub experience is highly preferred but circulator roles will be considered. The position includes on-call responsibilities and requires compliance with extensive background checks, health screenings, immunizations, competency exams, and facility-specific training and documentation.
