Job Opportunity: Operating Room Registered Nurse (OR RN Core 6)

Location: Indianapolis, Indiana
Employment Type: Travel/Contract

Specialty & Experience Requirements

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse (Operating Room)
  • Years of Experience Required: 3 years
  • Additional Experience:
    • 2+ years of Level I Trauma experience required (must have at least 1 year in Level I trauma).
    • Circulating experience required; scrubbing preferred.
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not explicitly required; first-time travelers accepted.

Job Details

  • Call required: 6 call shifts in a 6-week period (can vary).
  • Holidays required: Must work 2 out of 3 major holidays.
  • No block scheduling.
  • Clinician may float within scope to meet facility needs, except CV & Transplant areas.
  • Locals accepted (with a pay adjustment for Indiana residents).
  • Pending licenses not accepted; must have Indiana state license and required certifications in hand before submission.

Unit Information

  • Units: Core 3 & 4 including General, Plastic, Gynecology, ENT, Trauma, Neuro, Orthopedics, GU, Colorectal Robotics
  • Average Daily Census: 70-80 patients
  • Rooms: 21

Certifications Required

  • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA or RQI accepted (required for all candidates)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA or RQI accepted
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) - AHA or RQI accepted
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) - AHA NRP only
  • CHEMO (Chemotherapy certification) - as applicable
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) - as applicable
  • EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring) - per unit requirements
  • State License Verification (Indiana RN license)
  • Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement (HIPAA)
  • NIH Stroke Certification - as applicable

Competencies & Exams

  • Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam (not required for Techs or RRTs)
  • Color Blind Testing (Ishihara exam or equivalent, minimum 100% score)
  • Unit Competency Exam

Health & Background Requirements

  • Physical Exam: Completed within 12 months of start date
  • Fit Mask Test: Within 12 months of start; must be tested with approved respirators (3M N95 models or Honeywell N95)
  • Immunizations & Titers:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (strongly recommended)
    • Negative TB test or Chest X-Ray within 1 year
    • Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted
    • Hepatitis B: Series, titer, or signed declination required
    • Varicella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted
  • Drug Testing: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months
  • Flu Vaccination: Required for 2025-26 flu season; no declinations accepted (medical/religious exemptions require approval)
  • Color Blind Exam: Ishihara or equivalent, minimum 100% score

Background Checks & Documentation

  • Background Check: Required within 90 days of start, including 7 years of residence/work history, SSN trace, criminal checks, sex offender registry, FACIS Level III
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks: Required within 30 days of start
  • Education Verification: Completed by 3rd party; may be pending at start but must be obtained
  • Transcript/Diploma: Official copies required; may be pending at start if needed
  • References: Minimum 2 references from recent employment within 2 years; must be from charge, manager, supervisor, or above
  • Employment Application: Must be current and explain any gaps of 30+ days over the past 7 years
  • Skills Checklist: Required within 12 months of start and annually thereafter

Facility & Orientation Requirements

  • Must complete facility-specific forms and packets prior to start (including Look of Assurance, Compliance Checklist, Confidentiality Agreement, Policy Information, Self Study Orientation & Test, Fast Track Slide Packet, and others as applicable)
  • Mandatory completion of 22 RRT modules for Respiratory Therapists (not applicable for RN)
  • Charting system: Cerner
  • Parking: Free
  • Scrub color provided

Additional Notes

  • IU Health will not allow Indiana RN travelers to work at most IU Health facilities effective 11/30/2024, except for Perioperative/OR RN travelers and certain allied/ambulatory RN roles, who are exempt and allowed to work past this date.
  • OR RNs need to be well-rounded and current in most areas except Cardiovascular and Transplant, as they may be floated to other units as needed.

This position is ideal for experienced OR Registered Nurses with Level I trauma experience who are comfortable with call and holiday requirements and are flexible to float within the perioperative environment. First-time travel nurses are welcome to apply.
