Job Description

  • Cardiac experience is required.
  • Must have experience working in Step-Down (SD) or Progressive Care Unit (PCU) with a 1:5 patient ratio documented in work history. ICU experience does not count towards SD/PCU experience.
  • Targeted patient ratios are typically 1:4, but can be up to 1:5-6.
  • Unit may use a team nursing model partnering RNs, LPNs, and PCTs.
  • Must have EPIC electronic health record experience.
  • Must be able to pass an online EKG telemetry competency assessment before starting.
  • Required certifications: BLS and ACLS (must be able to read and interpret EKG strips).
  • Experience with drawing arterial blood gases (ABGs) is required.
  • Nurses will be fitted for N95 masks prior to working on the High-Risk Respiratory Unit (HRRU) unless PAPR is offered/needed.
  • Preferred: 1.5 years of experience and level 1 or 2 PCU experience.
  • Prior travel experience is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Floating is expected; travelers may float to other specialty clusters including high-risk respiratory/COVID units.
  • Must be available to work every other weekend and holidays.
  • Unit involves working with telemetry, drips (including cardiac drips such as Cardizem, Cardene, dobutamine, dopamine, heparin, nitro, insulin), and drawing ABGs.
  • Navy blue scrubs required.

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 1.5 years of PCU or Step-Down nursing experience (higher experience requirement applies).
  • Cardiac nursing experience required.
  • Prior travel experience preferred but not required.

Certifications & Competencies Required

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • Successful completion of an EKG telemetry competency exam (must pass with 80% or higher within 3 attempts)
  • Experience with ABG draws
  • EPIC experience
  • Other certifications may be required depending on unit (e.g., NIH Stroke Certification, PALS, NRP, TNCC) but are not specified as mandatory for this role.

Additional Requirements

  • Pass a 7-year criminal background check and other standard background screenings.
  • Drug screening within 12 months prior to start.
  • Physical exam within 2 years indicating fitness to work.
  • Immunizations and health documents including TB test, flu vaccination (or approved exemption), and others as per facility policy.
  • Must complete a medical questionnaire for respiratory protection and be cleared for N95 mask fitting.
  • Must provide 2 professional references (one must be a manager/supervisor/charge nurse) or employment verification if references are unavailable.
  • Skills checklist updated within 1 year prior to documentation due date.
  • Must be willing to float to other units as needed.

Work Schedule

  • 36 or 48-hour shifts accepted.
  • Overtime paid after 48 hours for 48-hour contracts.
  • Must be available to work every other weekend and holidays.

This position is ideal for a Registered Nurse with solid PCU/Step-Down and cardiac experience, comfortable with telemetry and critical care drips, who is flexible with floating and weekend/holiday shifts. Prior travel experience is preferred but not mandatory.
