Job Opportunity: Step Down Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)
Location: Dayton, Ohio
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Specialty
- Registered Nurse (RN)
- Cardiac experience required
- Must have experience with CABG and valve post-op
- Must have some Step Down (SD) or Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience with a 1:5 patient ratio documented in work history (ICU experience does NOT count)
- 1.5 years of experience preferred, with some level 1 or 2 preferred
- Prior travel experience preferred (not required)
Unit Details
- 36-bed unit specializing in pre and post-op open heart management including CABG, valve, mitral clip, TAVR, thoracotomy, etc.
- Lung cases including pneumothorax, hemothorax, chest tube, zephyr valve
- Advanced care cardiac patients with continuous telemetry
- Targeted patient ratios: 1:4-6
- Navy Blue Scrubs required
Required Skills & Certifications
- EPIC experience required
- Must pass an online EKG tele competency assessment before starting
- BLS, ACLS, IV start, NIH & cardiac drip titration skills required (must be able to read and interpret EKG strips)
- Nurses will be fitted for N95 masks prior to working on the High-Risk Respiratory Unit (HRRU) unless PAPR is offered/needed
- Must be available to work every other weekend and holidays
Floating & Other Requirements
- Traveler will float at Premier’s discretion, including to high-risk respiratory/COVID units
- Floating may include main campus and nearby campuses within 10-15 miles
- Premier Health reserves the right to cancel shifts with notice and cancel agreements with 2 weeks’ notice without fee or fine
- Travelers are not eligible for Premier Health employee incentives
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- I-9, Government Issued Photo ID, and E-Verify required
- Background checks including 7-year criminal background, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG required
- Fingerprinting not required unless working with infants, children, elderly, pharmacy techs, or pain management clinics
- Education verification required for non-RN candidates
- State licensure verification (Ohio RN license) and NURSYS verification required
- Physical exam within 2 years indicating fitness to work
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray required; annual TB questionnaire if past positive
- Drug screening within 12 months, including marijuana panel; random drug screening during orientation week
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season
- Respiratory safety clearance required within 1 year and renewed annually
- References: 2 professional references within 2 years required (1 must be manager/supervisor/charge RN)
- Current resume/application required
- Skills checklist updated within 1 year required
- Work history verification required if references are not available
Competency Exams
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exam within 2 years
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year or must be completed within 72 hours of contract signing (3 attempts max, 80% passing score)
- Unit-specific competency exam within 2 years
- Color blind testing required for lab units only
Certifications Summary
- ACLS (AHA only) required for all RNs except Labor & Delivery
- BLS (AHA only) required for all clinical positions
- NIH Stroke Certification required within 12 months for most RN units (exceptions apply)
- Other certifications (PALS, NRP, TNCC, EFM) required based on unit assignment
Additional Notes
- Must submit Request Time Off (RTO) with initial application; no RTO added after offer
- Application must clearly document required experience and certifications to avoid delays
This position is ideal for RNs with cardiac and step-down experience looking for a travel contract in Ohio with a reputable health system. Prior travel experience is preferred but not mandatory.
