Description

Job Opportunity: Physical Therapist (Rehabilitation Therapy)

Location: Sitka, Alaska
Employment Type: Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

Provide inpatient and outpatient physical therapy evaluations and treatments focused on improving patients' functional abilities. Work in a 25-bed critical access hospital and community settings, including home visits and remote locations. Occasional multi-day travel by boat or small plane in potentially harsh weather conditions is required.


Key Responsibilities

  • Assess, evaluate, and develop physical therapy treatment plans with goals for a diverse patient population.
  • Implement, supervise, and modify therapy plans to optimize patient outcomes.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare teams, attend care conferences, and communicate patient status.
  • Document patient encounters, diagnoses, treatment plans, and progress according to hospital policies.
  • Provide patient and family education, including home exercise programs tailored to individual needs.
  • Direct support staff, students, or interns as needed.
  • Assist with clinic operations, administrative tasks, and specialty/research areas.
  • Participate in community health programs, including off-site clinics, senior centers, schools, and home assessments.
  • Educate staff and provide therapy consultations, presentations, and in-services.
  • Maintain compliance with regulatory, licensure, and professional standards (APTA).
  • Adhere to confidentiality, quality assurance, and cultural sensitivity standards.

Required Qualifications

  • Active Alaska Physical Therapist license at time of submission.
  • Entry-level qualifying Master’s or Doctorate degree in Physical Therapy from an accredited program, or Baccalaureate with 2 years of relevant work and continuing education experience equivalent to a Master’s level.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Must have flu vaccinations and submit fingerprint cards upon acceptance.

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in Physical Therapy or equivalent education and continuing education.
  • Prior travel experience is not explicitly required.

Skills and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of musculoskeletal physiology, assessment techniques, and treatment planning.
  • Proficient in fitting and training patients with adaptive devices and durable medical equipment.
  • Effective communication skills for diverse audiences including patients, families, and healthcare professionals.
  • Ability to use information technology and multiple software applications.
  • Physical ability to safely deliver treatment and assist patient mobility, including lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Sound judgment in patient care, workplace safety, and employee relations.
  • Sensitivity to cross-cultural issues and ability to work with diverse populations.

Work Environment and Additional Information

  • Work may involve small spaces, fast pace, and interaction with a variety of personalities.
  • Exposure to infectious organisms possible; use of protective equipment required.
  • Latex may be present in the workplace.
  • Services provided in inpatient, outpatient, community, home, and remote settings.
  • Occasional travel to remote locations by boat or plane for multiple days, possibly in harsh weather.
  • Position covered under the Indian Child Protection Act.

This position requires a dedicated physical therapist comfortable with a variety of clinical settings and occasional travel in challenging environments.
