Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (PCU) - Travel/Contract
Location: Overland Park, Kansas
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
- Acute Med Surg unit with emphasis on rehab services
- Average daily census: 24-30 patients
- 30 beds total
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:6 on all shifts
- Floating between departments, units, and facilities may be required
- Holiday shifts required if they fall on scheduled days
- Minimum of 8 weekend shifts required per 6 weeks
- No block scheduling accommodations
- Local candidates not accepted (must live at least 75 miles away)
- No pending state license accepted
- Maximum of 7 days off between shifts (RTO restrictions)
- Guaranteed minimum of 3 shifts per 13 weeks
Required Qualifications
- Specialty: Registered Nurse (PCU)
- Years of Experience: Minimum 1 year in specialty
- First-timers accepted: Yes
- Certifications:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) required
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) may be required depending on unit
- Other certifications may be required based on unit (e.g., PALS, NRP, TNCC, CPI/MAB)
- Skills Required:
- Acute Rehab hospital experience
- Telemetry monitoring (both on-unit and remote)
- Blood glucose monitoring and insulin protocols
- Thickened liquids management
- Foley catheter removal
- Administration of blood and blood products
- Central line care (PICC lines)
- Starting and maintaining IVs
- Pulse oximetry
- Fall risk assessment and prevention
- Infection prevention and isolation precautions/PPE use
Compliance and Background Requirements
- Government-issued ID required
- Criminal background check within 6 months, including statewide and nationwide searches
- Quarterly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks
- Fingerprinting required for assignments in Illinois long-term care or rehab units
- Education verification of highest nursing degree required
- State-specific background checks as applicable (Missouri, Illinois)
- Drug testing within 1 year of start, must include specific panels and be valid throughout assignment
- Physical exam within 1 year of start
- Fit mask testing (N95) required and must be renewed annually
- Immunizations and titers required or declination forms for:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap
- TB testing (2 negative PPDs or equivalent)
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella
- Hepatitis B declination required (not vaccination)
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season
- Various facility-specific documents and acknowledgements (HIPAA, confidentiality, hand hygiene, dress code, latex allergy, etc.) must be completed prior to start
- Competency exams and skills checklists required, including medication/pharmacology and unit-specific competencies
Additional Information
- Facility uses EPIC for charting
- Scrub color for RNs: navy blue
- Lift equipment available for patient handling
- Two professional references required (supervisors preferred)
- Employment application and performance evaluations may be required
- Floating within scope of practice expected to meet facility needs
This position is ideal for a Registered Nurse with acute rehab and telemetry experience who is comfortable working in a fast-paced PCU environment and meeting weekend and holiday shift requirements.
