Travel/Contract Registered Nurse (Medical Surgical)
Location: Indianapolis, Indiana
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
Seeking a Registered Nurse for a travel/contract position in a teaching hospital setting. The role involves working primarily in Medical Surgical and Neuro/Stroke units with possible floating to PCU and ICU. Candidates must be flexible with weekend shifts and willing to float as needed. Charge nurse responsibilities may be required with training provided.
Key Responsibilities
- Work 50% of weekends during the contract based on unit needs.
- Refusal to float may result in contract termination.
- Precepting and/or supervising students may be required.
- Must be willing to take charge nurse role or be open to training for charge.
- Floating between Med-Surg, PCU, and ICU units as needed.
- Staffing ratios typically 1:5-6.
Required Qualifications
- Registered Nurse license for Indiana (IN/Compact license) in hand or fingerprint application submitted.
- Minimum 2 years of nursing experience required.
- BLS certification required.
- Skillset: Medical Surgical nursing, MS/Telemetry, IV start.
- Preferred skills: Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias.
- Must be flexible with weekend requirements and floating.
- First-time travelers accepted.
Certifications (as applicable)
- BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA or RQI accepted.
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA or RQI accepted.
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) - AHA or RQI accepted (if applicable).
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) - AHA accepted (if applicable).
- Other certifications may be required based on unit assignment (e.g., CHEMO, TNCC, NIH Stroke Certification).
Health and Compliance Requirements
- Physical exam within 12 months of start date.
- Fit mask test within 12 months (specific approved respirators required).
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months.
- Immunizations and titers required:
- Rubeola (Measles) - positive titer or 2 vaccines required, no declinations accepted.
- Mumps - positive titer or 2 vaccines required, no declinations accepted.
- Rubella - positive titer or 2 vaccines required, no declinations accepted.
- Varicella - positive titer or 2 vaccines required, no declinations accepted.
- Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination required.
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap preferred but not required.
- Tuberculosis screening within 1 year (PPD, QuantiFERON-TB Gold, or T-SPOT). If positive, chest X-ray and documentation required.
- Annual TB questionnaire required.
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/30 - 3/31). Declinations not accepted.
Additional Requirements
- Must complete facility-specific orientation, compliance, and safety training modules prior to start.
- Background checks including 7-year work/life history, criminal, sex offender, and education verification required.
- Minimum of 2 professional references from recent employment with supervisory titles required.
- Skills checklist and competency exams required annually.
- Must be willing to comply with facility policies including HIPAA and confidentiality agreements.
Notes
- IU Health will not allow Indiana RN licenses to start new contracts after 9/9/2024 for most units, except Periop/OR, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers who are exempt.
- On-site PAPR respirators are available at Methodist and University hospitals with automatic approval.
- Call-in shifts must be made up during the pay period or added to the end of the contract depending on FTE status.
This position is ideal for experienced Medical Surgical RNs who are flexible, willing to float, and open to charge nurse responsibilities in a dynamic teaching hospital environment.
