Travel Registered Nurse (Step Down Unit)

Location: Dayton, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract

Job Summary

Seeking a Registered Nurse for a Step Down (SD) unit with a 1:4 targeted patient ratio (can be up to 1:5-6). The unit is trialing a team nursing model where two nurses and a Patient Care Technician (PCT) partner together to care for a group of patients. Nurses may function in either team nursing or primary nursing depending on the trial status.


Patient Population & Unit Details

  • Patients primarily with COPD, CHF, Pneumonia, Flu, Sepsis, Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA), and Post-COVID conditions.
  • Care includes ventilators, tracheostomies, bipaps, high oxygen requirements, insulin drips, heparin, Cardizem, and other drips.
  • No orally intubated patients on the unit.
  • Work involves Telemetry, drips, and ventilators.
  • Navy blue scrubs required.

Required Experience & Skills

  • Minimum 1.5 years Step Down or PCU experience with some level 1 or 2 preferred.
  • ICU experience does NOT count toward Step Down/PCU experience requirement.
  • Must have ventilator experience.
  • Must have EPIC electronic medical record experience.
  • Must be able to work 36 or 48-hour shifts.
  • Must be able to float to other Premier Health specialty clusters and campuses within 15 miles.
  • Must be available to work every other weekend and holidays.

Prior Travel Experience

  • Travel experience is preferred but not explicitly required.

Required Certifications & Licenses

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license for Ohio (primary source verification required).
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA only.
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA only, required for all RNs except L&D.
  • Must pass an online EKG Telemetry competency assessment before starting.
  • Ability to read and interpret EKG strips required.
  • Fit testing for N95 respirator prior to working on the unit (PAPR offered if needed).

Additional Requirements

  • Pass a Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam within 1 year of start or complete within 72 hours of contract signing (3 attempts max, 80% passing score).
  • Complete medication/pharmacology competency exam within 2 years of start.
  • Physical exam within 2 years indicating fitness to work and free of communicable diseases.
  • Negative drug screen (9 or 10 panel including marijuana) within 12 months prior to documentation due date.
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season.
  • Respiratory safety clearance within 1 year of start, renewed annually.
  • 7-year criminal background check and other standard background screenings required.
  • Two professional references within 2 years required (one must be a manager/supervisor/charge RN).
  • Current resume/application required.
  • Skills checklist updated within 1 year prior to documentation due date.

Floating & Scheduling

  • Traveler will be first to float at Premier’s discretion.
  • Floating assignments will be medically appropriate and may include main campus and satellite campuses within 15 miles.
  • Premier Health reserves the right to cancel shifts due to low census with appropriate notice.

Summary

This is a travel contract RN position on a Step Down unit requiring at least 1.5 years of Step Down/PCU experience (ICU experience does not count), ventilator and EPIC experience, and strong competency in telemetry and EKG interpretation. The role involves working in a team nursing model with a patient population requiring complex care including ventilators and drips. Travel experience is preferred but not mandatory. The contract length is approximately 13 weeks.
