Job Overview

Seeking Float Pool RNs to work across MedSurg, Telemetry, and Stepdown units. Nurses will float between these areas as needed.

Units & Patient Care Details

MedSurg Units (1W MedSurg & 2E MedSurg)

• Beds: 28-29 private beds per unit
• Patient Types:

  • 1W: Mainly post-surgical and orthopedic patients
  • 2E: MedSurg patients including pneumonia, dialysis, palliative care, hospice, end-of-life, and low volume inpatient chemo. COVID patients may be present on one hallway; nurses must be comfortable caring for both COVID-positive and COVID-negative patients simultaneously.
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:6-7
• Certifications Required: BLS
• Shifts: 12-hour shifts (7a-7:30p; 7p-7:30a)
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Sat/Sun), plus 2 Fridays per schedule (often grouped Fri/Sat/Sun)
• Floating: Only to other MedSurg units
• Orientation: 1 shift with a preceptor
• Additional Info:

  • No nurse aides on night shifts; 2 CNAs on day shifts
  • No nurse reading of telemetry strips; tele patients monitored remotely
  • Manage Heparin and comfort drips (e.g., MSO4), no cardiac drips
  • Vent support includes Bipap, Cpap, High Flow managed by RT

Telemetry/Stepdown Unit (3W Stepdown)

• Beds: 28 private beds
• Patient Types: Heavy cardiac cases including dysrhythmias, CVAs, and patients downgraded from ICU
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:4-5
• Certifications Required: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS
• Shifts: 12-hour shifts (7a-7:30p; 7p-7:30a)
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Days Sat/Sun, Nights Fri/Sat/Sun)
• Floating: May float to ICU as helping hands
• Orientation: 2 shifts with a preceptor
• Additional Info:

  • Nurses must be able to read and interpret telemetry strips (monitor tech present)
  • Must titrate drips including Cardizem, Nitro, Dopamine, Dobutamine, and Heparin (no sedation drips)
  • Vent support includes Bipap, Cpap, High Flow
  • Hospitalist in-house 24/7; Intensivist on-site 7a-7p and on-call after hours
  • RT and Pharmacy available 24/7
  • No IV team; ICU charge nurses or director assist with difficult IVs
  • 2 CNAs on day and mid shifts; no CNA after 11pm

Required Qualifications

• License: Registered Nurse (RN) license valid in Pennsylvania
• Certifications:

  • BLS (required for all units)
  • ACLS and NIHSS (required for Telemetry/Stepdown unit)
• Experience: Minimum 1 year of RN experience in MedSurg, Telemetry, or Stepdown nursing (higher experience preferred if indicated)
• Prior Travel Experience: Not explicitly required

Additional Information

• Scrub color: Navy blue (jackets must also be navy blue if worn)
• EMR system currently Cerner, switching to Epic soon
• Self-scheduling and block scheduling allowed as long as unit needs are met
• Holiday work integrated into permanent staff rotation
• Supportive management with good communication and flexibility

This position is ideal for RNs comfortable with floating between MedSurg and Tele/Stepdown units, managing a variety of patient acuities including cardiac and post-surgical care, and working in a dynamic hospital environment.
