Location: Newark, New Jersey

Job Description

  • Primary Unit: Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
  • Float assignments may include Pediatrics and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), and possibly other units based on skill set and hospital needs (floating confirmed with traveler)
  • Patient ratio approximately 1:2+
  • Unit size: 19 beds
  • Charting system: EPIC
  • Schedule: Every other weekend (Saturday/Sunday)
  • Scrub color: Navy Blue

Required Experience

  • Minimum 2+ years of PICU critical care experience
  • 1 year of cardiac experience strongly preferred (both must be documented on skills checklist)
  • Experience with Medtronic pacemakers and telemetry monitoring required
  • Experience with BIPAP/CPAP, ventilators, high flow nasal cannula, and tracheostomies required

Required Certifications & Licenses

  • Registered Nurse (RN) license valid in New Jersey
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA required (RQI and instructor cards acceptable)
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) - AHA required (RQI and instructor cards acceptable)
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) preferred but not required
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) required for all adult critical care units; confirm if required for PICU
  • Other certifications may be required based on unit and role

Prior Travel Experience

  • First-time travelers are not accepted; prior travel experience is required

Additional Requirements

  • Must complete a skills checklist annually
  • Must be able to float to other units as needed
  • References: 2 references within the last 2 years, including at least one managerial reference
  • Employment application or resume with 7 years of work history required
  • Work history verification required for New Jersey candidates (minimum 1 year prior to start date verified)
  • Must comply with facility floating policy for every new assignment or site transfer

Health & Safety Requirements

  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within required timeframes
  • Physical exam within the last 12 months, cleared to perform essential job functions and free of communicable disease
  • Drug screen within 30 days of start (10-panel urine drug screen)
  • Influenza vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually
  • Fit test for respirator use (on-site fit testing mandatory)
  • Latex allergy screening questionnaire if applicable
  • Color blindness exam if job tasks require color discrimination
  • Respiratory medical clearance required prior to start
  • Various immunizations and titers required:
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella (positive IgG titer or vaccination proof)
    • Varicella (chickenpox) immunity proof
    • Hepatitis B immunity or vaccination compliance
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap within last 10 years

Competency & Testing Requirements

  • Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam required for all RNs
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam required for applicable units
  • Pass/Fail testing for EKG and Pharmacology exams with remediation process
  • Color Blind Testing (online) within 1 year of start
  • Annual education sign-off and safety manual acknowledgement required
  • Background checks including criminal background, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG, and state-specific exclusions list (New Jersey) required within 30 days of start

Facility Specific Training & Documentation

  • Annual education PowerPoint review and sign-off
  • Vendor medical clearance form if history of positive TB
  • Blood transfusion reaction procedure and SBAR sign-off sheet for all RNs
  • Iron Temple Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB) training required for ER, Pediatric ER, and Behavioral Health RNs (includes online and in-person portions)
  • Various CEU requirements depending on specialty and unit (e.g., stroke, trauma, surgical tech)

Summary

This is a 13-week travel contract for an experienced PICU Registered Nurse with strong critical care and cardiac experience. The role requires flexibility to float to Pediatrics and NICU, adherence to strict health and safety protocols, and prior travel experience. Certifications in BLS, PALS, and possibly ACLS are mandatory. Candidates must be prepared for comprehensive competency testing and facility-specific training.
