Job Description
- Work in a 32-bed mixed model unit with 15 PCU beds and 17 MedSurg beds.
- Patient population includes cardiac medical, valve replacement (cardiac and pulmonary), COPD, CHF, pulmonary fibrosis, lung cancer, lung transplant (pre/post), trach-to-vent patients, neurodegenerative diseases requiring trach-to-vent, trauma (cervical spinal fractures) requiring trach-to-vent, flu, TB, and COVID-19.
- Staffing ratios: PCU assignments are 1:4; MedSurg assignments are 1:5-6. Sometimes MedSurg and PCU patients are mixed in assignments of 4-5 patients.
- Floating may be required to different levels of care (Med-Surg, PCU, ICU) with resources provided.
- Travelers must be willing to precept and/or have students shadow them.
- Weekend shifts: expected to work every other weekend; consecutive weekends may be required based on operational needs.
- Charge nurse responsibilities may be required with training and resources provided.
- Locals are not accepted.
- COVID-19 vaccine is required (medical or religious exemptions accepted with documentation).
- Indiana RN license restrictions apply after 11/30/2024 except for Periop/OR RN’s, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience; MedSurg RNs with ICU and PCU experience plus an additional 2 years will also be considered.
- Certifications required: ACLS and BCLS (AHA or RQI accepted).
- Valid Indiana RN license (online verification required within 30 days before start).
- Must be willing to complete mandatory IU Health training modules prior to orientation.
- Must agree to precepting and student assignments.
- COVID-19 vaccination required (with accepted exemptions).
Prior Travel Experience
- No explicit prior travel experience required.
Certifications & Competencies
- ACLS and BLS required.
- Other certifications such as PALS, NRP, CHEMO, TNCC, EFM, NIH Stroke, and others may be required depending on unit assignment.
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exam and unit competency exam required.
- Color Blind Testing (Ishihara or equivalent) required with 100% minimum score.
- Fit mask test within 12 months of start date required (specific respirators approved).
- Physical exam within 12 months of start date required.
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months required.
- Immunizations and titers required: Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B, Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (preferred but not required), TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year.
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually.
Additional Requirements
- Must complete background checks including criminal, sex offender, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG within required timeframes.
- Education verification and transcript/diploma required.
- Minimum of 2 professional references from recent employment with supervisory titles.
- Skills checklist required annually.
- Employment application with full work history and explanation of gaps required.
- Must complete facility-specific compliance and confidentiality agreements prior to start.
Work Expectations
- Call-in shifts must be made up during the pay period or added to the end of the contract depending on FTE status.
- Floating to different care levels may be required.
- Precepting and student shadowing are mandatory.
- Weekend work every other week, with possible consecutive weekends based on need.
- Charge nurse duties may be assigned with training.
This position is ideal for experienced PCU RNs comfortable with a cardio-pulmonary patient population and flexible in floating and precepting roles.
