Travel/Contract Registered Nurse (Medical Surgical)
Location: Indianapolis, Indiana
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Must be flexible with weekend requirements; expected to work 50% of weekends during the contract.
- Teaching facility: travel nurses may be required to precept or have students shadow them.
- Locals are not accepted for this position.
- Call-in shifts must be made up during the pay period or added to the end of the contract depending on FTE status.
- Charge nurse responsibilities may be required with training and resources provided.
- Floating to different levels of care (Med-Surg, PCU, ICU) may be expected.
- Staffing ratios typically 1:5-6.
- Unit handles trauma cases including GSW, blunt trauma, stab wounds, MVC, falls, orthopedic injuries, ostomies, hernia repairs, skin flaps, significant wounds, and surgical drains.
- Periop/OR RN’s, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers are exempt from the local RN restriction effective 11/30/24.
Required Qualifications
- License: Indiana RN or Compact RN license in hand or fingerprint application submitted.
- Experience: Minimum 2 years of nursing experience required. Level 1 Trauma experience preferred.
- Certifications:
- BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA or RQI accepted
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA or RQI accepted
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) - AHA or RQI accepted (as applicable)
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) - AHA only (as applicable)
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) - as applicable
- Other certifications may be required depending on unit assignment (e.g., Chemotherapy, NIH Stroke Certification, EFM)
- Competencies:
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required
- Unit competency exam required
- Color blind testing (Ishihara exam or equivalent) with 100% minimum score
- Health Requirements:
- Physical exam within 12 months of start
- Fit mask test within 12 months (specific approved respirators required)
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months
- Immunizations and titers:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (preferred but not required)
- TB test (PPD, QuantiFERON, or T-SPOT) within 1 year
- Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted
- Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination required
- Varicella: positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted
- Seasonal Flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season
- Background Checks:
- Comprehensive background check within 90 days of start including 7 years of history, SSN trace, criminal, sex offender, FACIS Level III, education verification, and international search if applicable
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start
- History:
- Minimum 2 references from recent employment verified within 2 years; references must be from charge, manager, supervisor, or above
- Current employment application with explanation of any gaps over 30 days
- Skills checklist completed within 12 months and annually thereafter
- Facility Specific Requirements:
- Completion of mandatory orientation modules (22 modules including Environment of Care, HIPAA, Infection Prevention, etc.) prior to start
- Completion of facility-specific compliance and confidentiality agreements
- Various facility-specific forms and packets must be completed as a priority
Additional Notes
- First-time travelers are accepted.
- Prior travel experience is not explicitly required.
- Travelers must be prepared to float to different units and potentially take on charge nurse duties.
- Weekend work flexibility is mandatory.
