Travel/Contract Registered Nurse (ICU) - Jersey City, New Jersey

Job Details

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse (ICU)

  • Contract Length: 13 weeks
  • Hours: Approximately 35.25 hours per week
  • Schedule: Every other weekend; no block scheduling
  • Patient Ratio:
    • 1:1-3 for critical care patients
    • 1:4-6+ if floated (confirm with traveler)
  • Patient Mix: Acute renal failure, GI surgery, CVAs, TBIs, vented patients
  • Float Units: May include additional units based on skill set and hospital needs

Required Experience

  • Minimum 1.5 years of acute care experience related to the position
  • Experience in Neuro ICU/SICU strongly preferred
  • Strong skills required in:
    • EKG interpretation
    • Pulmonary Artery Line/Swan Ganz monitoring
    • TAVI/TAVR procedures
    • Insulin protocols
    • CVVHD/CRRT
    • IV skills
    • Lumbar drains
    • Post-neuro surgery care
    • EVD and ventilator management
  • Experience with IABP/Impella/LVAD is preferred
  • First-time travelers accepted
  • Prior travel experience is NOT required

Required Certifications and Licenses

  • Registered Nurse license valid in New Jersey
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • NIH Stroke Certification
  • Other certifications may be required depending on unit assignment (confirm with program coordinator)

Clinical and Competency Requirements

  • Strong competency in medication administration and pharmacology
  • Pass/Fail testing on EKG and medication knowledge required
  • Completion of competency exams within 72 hours of signing contract
  • Skills checklist must be completed and updated annually
  • References: 2 references within last 2 years, including at least one managerial reference
  • Employment application or resume with 7 years of work history required
  • Work history verification required for New Jersey candidates (minimum 1 year prior to start date)

Health and Safety Requirements

  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 3 months of start
  • Physical exam within 12 months confirming ability to perform essential job functions and free of communicable disease
  • Drug screen within 30 days of start (10-panel urine drug screen)
  • Seasonal influenza vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually
  • Fit test for respirator use (N-95) if job tasks require it
  • Latex allergy screening questionnaire if applicable
  • Color blindness test if job tasks require color discrimination
  • Respiratory medical clearance required prior to start
  • Various immunizations and titers required or proof of immunity:
    • Measles (Rubeola)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Varicella
    • Hepatitis B
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within past 10 years)

Orientation and Training

  • EPIC charting system used
  • Navy blue scrubs required
  • Completion of annual education sign-off and safety manual acknowledgment
  • Vendor medical clearance form required if history of positive TB
  • Facility-specific orientation and competency sign-offs required prior to start
  • Pass/fail testing remediation process in place if needed

Additional Notes

  • Locals accepted; no fresh graduates ("No Fresh Hearts")
  • Floating to other units may be required based on hospital needs and skill set
  • Must comply with facility policies including flu vaccination, background checks, and drug screening
  • Background check required within 30 days of start, including criminal, sex offender, and other relevant searches
  • Candidates must sign job description prior to start for assigned unit
