Job Opportunity: PCU Float Registered Nurse

Location: New Brunswick, New Jersey
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Float position covering MS/Tele, PCU, and ED holding units (True float pool)
  • Patient Ratios: 1:4+ for PCU; 1:5 for MS/Tele (confirm with traveler)
  • Must have well-rounded Stepdown or PCU experience
  • Required skillset includes:
    • EKG interpretation and management
    • Renal failure
    • CVAs (strokes)
    • TBIs (traumatic brain injuries)
    • Chest tubes
    • CPAP/BIPAP
    • ABGs (arterial blood gases)
    • Trachs
    • Wound vacs
  • Schedule includes every other weekend and holiday
  • No block scheduling
  • Locals and first-time travelers accepted

Required Qualifications

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse (PCU Float)
  • Years of Experience: Minimum 2 years acute care experience, including at least 1 year PCU experience
  • Certifications:
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • NIH Stroke Certification (required for MS/Tele and adult critical care units)
    • IV Certification
  • Licensure: Valid RN license for New Jersey
  • Competencies:
    • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam
    • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam
    • Pass/Fail testing including pharmacology and EKG exams
  • Additional Skills: Ability to float between multiple units and manage diverse patient care needs

Prior Travel Experience

  • Prior travel experience not required (first-time travelers accepted)

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Employment application or resume with 7 years of work history
  • Two references within the last 2 years (one managerial)
  • Background check within 30 days of start (including criminal, MVR/DMV, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG)
  • Drug screen within 30 days of start (10-panel urine drug screen)
  • Physical exam within the last 12 months, cleared to perform essential job functions and free of communicable disease
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray per facility protocol
  • Immunizations and titers:
    • Hepatitis B (titer or vaccine compliance)
    • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella)
    • Varicella
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years)
  • Seasonal influenza vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption (annual requirement)
  • Fit test and respiratory medical clearance (required prior to start)
  • Color blindness exam if job tasks require color discrimination
  • Completion of facility-specific education and safety acknowledgments (e.g., OSHA, HIPAA, Joint Commission)
  • Floating policy acknowledgment for every new assignment
  • Medication and EKG competency exams must be completed within 72 hours of signing contract
  • Pass/fail testing remediation process in place for failed attempts

Additional Requirements

  • Must complete Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB) training if assigned to ER, Pediatric ER, or Behavioral Health units (not required for PCU Float)
  • Must complete annual education sign-off and facility-specific orientation materials prior to start
  • Must comply with all facility-specific policies and documentation requirements

Work Environment

  • True float pool role requiring flexibility to work across multiple units
  • Patient acuity includes stepdown and telemetry level care
  • Navy blue scrub color required
