Job Summary: Registered Nurse (RN) - MedSurg Level 8 - 23

Location: Weirton, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit Information

  • 48 beds
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios:
    • Day shift: 1:5-7
    • Night shift: 1:6-8
  • Common patient diagnoses: Pneumonia, UTI, AMS, GI bleed, Alcohol withdrawal, falls/weakness
  • Charge Nurse coverage:
    • Day shift: 2 charge nurses, both take patient assignments
    • Night shift: 2 charge nurses scheduled; if only 1 charge nurse, they do not take an assignment
  • Patient care techs (PCTs) or nurse aides:
    • Ratio approximately 1:10-12, may be higher
    • Duties include vitals, blood glucose monitoring (BGM), EKGs, applying heart monitors, bathing, feeding, toileting, turning, and positioning

Required Qualifications

  • RN License required
  • BLS Certification required
  • Minimum 1 year of MedSurg nursing experience (higher experience requirement confirmed)
  • First-time travel nurses accepted (no prior travel experience required)

Clinical Responsibilities

  • RNs are required to titrate drips with some exceptions (no cardiac drip titration)
  • Common drips include heparin, bumex, lasix
  • Respiratory Therapy (RT) handles breathing treatments, inhalers, ABGs, and manages respiratory equipment (BiPAP, CPAP, high flow O2)
  • RNs monitor respiratory equipment but do not perform treatments or checks
  • Telemetry monitoring is done by dedicated monitor techs; RNs are not required to read or interpret telemetry strips

Scheduling & Work Environment

  • Shifts: 12-hour shifts, 7am-7pm for RNs; 6am-6pm for CNAs
  • No self-scheduling or block scheduling; schedule created by manager with consideration for requested time off
  • Weekend requirement: every other weekend
  • Holiday requirement: may be asked to work on holidays as part of rotation
  • No call or standby requirement
  • Floating: may be floated to other MedSurg units or Intermediate Care (IMC) for lower acuity patients
  • Dress code: Navy blue scrubs for RNs

Orientation

  • 1 day educator/computer system training
  • 1 day preceptor orientation
  • Orientation includes 12-hour day shifts, weekends as scheduled

Additional Notes

  • Candidates must submit a copy of an unexpired driver’s license
  • Licensing issues must be disclosed at time of submission
  • 50-mile radius rule applies for candidate submissions
