Description

Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - Emergency Department (ED)

Location: Sitka, Alaska
Employment Type: Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Summary

  • Coordinate and perform a variety of nursing care procedures for patients of all ages.
  • Work independently while following provider orders, standards of care, nursing policies, and hospital procedures.
  • Provide support to patients and families, adapting care based on patient conditions and treatments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Make independent clinical decisions during shifts and maintain accountability for all actions.
  • Consult with managers or ancillary departments in complex situations.
  • React calmly and make sound nursing judgments in emergencies.
  • Delegate and supervise CNA/Tech staff appropriately.
  • Implement safe, therapeutic, and efficient care for patients with multisystem diseases or treatment complications.
  • Prioritize patient care based on acuity and patient preferences.
  • Administer age-specific medications and therapeutics accurately.
  • Coordinate patient care activities with physicians and healthcare team members.
  • Educate patients and families about tests, procedures, disease processes, and coping strategies.
  • Document nursing assessments, care plans, patient progress, and discharge instructions thoroughly.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Participate in patient care conferences and develop educational programs for staff and patients.
  • Maintain certifications such as ACLS, PALS, TNCC/ATCN, and NRP within the first 6 months and bi-annually thereafter.
  • Support orientation and mentoring of new staff, travelers, and students.
  • Participate in departmental meetings and comply with scheduling and dress code policies.

Required Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Valid, current, full, and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Alaska at time of application.
  • One year of clinical nursing experience preferred.
  • Prior experience in the specialty area preferred.

Certifications

  • BLS and PALS required upon hire.
  • ACLS certification must be obtained within 6 months of hire.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of nursing care principles, diagnosis, and nursing processes (assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation).
  • Ability to recognize and respond promptly to emergent patient conditions.
  • Knowledge of pharmaceuticals, including effects and side effects, especially those relevant to the specialty area.
  • Proficiency in operating and monitoring medical equipment (e.g., defibrillators, monitors, ventilators).
  • Ability to assist with emergency procedures such as intubations, arterial line setup, arterial blood gas puncture, thoracentesis, and lavage.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills for accurate documentation and effective team communication.
  • Leadership skills to guide and work cooperatively with healthcare team members.
  • Ability to implement evidence-based nursing interventions and recognize adverse signs and symptoms promptly.

Additional Information

  • Must have or obtain flu vaccination.
  • Start date will be at least 4 weeks after fingerprint processing in Juneau.
  • Applicants must live at least 50 miles away from the facility location to be considered.
  • Housing and flights are not provided.

This position is ideal for experienced RNs seeking a contract role in a dynamic emergency department setting in Alaska.
