Job Opportunity: Medical Surgical Float Registered Nurse (RN)
Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Details
- Position/Specialty: Medical Surgical Float Pool RN
- Schedule:
- 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7 PM - 7:30 AM)
- 36 hours per week
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend (EOW)
- Holiday rotation required
- Float Assignments: Med Surg floors at Main hospital and Ashley River tower
- Patient Ratios: May vary depending on unit assigned
Required Experience & Qualifications
- Valid RN license in South Carolina
- Minimum 2 years of Medical Surgical nursing experience, including experience within the last year
- Experience in Medical Surgical and Telemetry nursing
- Telemetry experience
- Acute Care experience
- Float experience
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Background Checks:
- Annual background check covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
- Includes SSN Trace, Statewide, National Criminal, Sex Offender Registry, FACIS 3, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG
- Education Verification: Required
- References: Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations
- Employment History: Verification of last 3 clinical employers (or all if fewer than 3)
- Competency Exams: Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required
- Color Blind Testing: Required prior to start
- Physical Exam: Initial and updated annually, attesting ability to meet physical demands
- Fit Mask Test: N95 fit test within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually
- Immunizations & Health:
- Tdap within 10 years or declination form
- Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days or proof of prior positive with follow-up chest x-ray
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: Positive titer or vaccination series required; boosters if low titer
- Hepatitis B: Titer, vaccine series, or declination required
- Flu Vaccine: Required during flu season (Aug 1 - Apr 30); medical/religious exemptions accepted but no declinations
- COVID-19 Vaccines: Not required but highly preferred; declination form required if not vaccinated
- Drug Testing: 10-panel drug screen within 90 days prior to start
- Photo for Badge: Passport-style photo with solid light background, business casual attire, no hats or sunglasses
Additional Notes
- Hurricane season (June-November) may require assignment to emergency response teams
- Local candidates accepted on a case-by-case basis
- Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks
- Parking permit required with a $20 registration fee for garage use
This position is ideal for RNs with at least 2 years of experience in medical-surgical nursing who are comfortable working night shifts and floating between units in a Level I Trauma Center environment. First-time travel nurses are welcome to apply.
