Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - Cardio Thoracic ICU (CTICU)

Location: New Haven, Connecticut
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

Seeking an experienced Registered Nurse for a high-acuity Cardio Thoracic ICU (CTICU) with an average patient ratio of 1:2 for both day and night shifts. The role requires floating within scope to other high-volume ICUs as needed. Weekend shifts are required every other weekend.


Required Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of specialty experience (greater than 1 year stated, interpreted as 2 years)
  • Cardio Thoracic ICU experience and/or critical care experience required
  • First-time travelers accepted if they meet experience requirements
  • Prior travel experience is NOT required

Required Certifications

  • NIH Stroke Certification (NIHSS)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)

Licensure

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license for Connecticut
  • Pending license accepted with approval

Key Responsibilities & Requirements

  • Proficient with Swan-Ganz catheter monitoring
  • Must be knowledgeable and experienced in high-acuity cardiac ICU care
  • Floating to other high-volume ICUs within the facility system as needed
  • No on-call required
  • Guaranteed hours
  • Weekend shifts every other weekend

Background & Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check required within 12 months of start, updated annually
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start
  • Education verification required, including foreign equivalency for internationally educated nurses
  • Drug screening (10 panel) within 12 months of start
  • Physical exam within 12 months of start
  • Fit mask test within 12 months of start, updated annually
  • TB testing and questionnaire required, with specific documentation guidelines
  • Immunizations and titers required or exemptions with approval (Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B, Tdap preferred)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season
  • COVID vaccination preferred

Competency & Training Requirements

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required within 12 months of start
  • Color blind testing required for all candidates starting on or after 8/2/2024
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required for ICU and telemetry units
  • Multiple facility-specific training modules and attestations required, including but not limited to:
    • Stroke Education
    • CLABSI Prevention
    • Preventing Pressure Injury
    • Language Services
    • CAUTI Education
    • Patient Transportation with Oxygen
    • Suicide Risk and Environmental Assessment
    • Pyxis ES MedStation
    • Baxter Pump Interoperability
    • Patient Bedside Rounding
    • Ventricular Assist Device Awareness
    • Blood Administration
    • New Employee Orientation
    • 21st Century Cures Act Module
    • ED Handbook (if applicable)
    • eCart Training Module
    • Chaperone Policy Training

Additional Requirements

  • Employment application with 7-year work history and no gaps greater than 90 days
  • One supervisor reference within the past year (charge nurse references not accepted)
  • Skills checklist within 12 months of start
  • Work history verification for last 7 years (attestations not accepted)
  • Attestation of prior radiation exposure if applicable

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Connecticut
  • Minimum 2 years of Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU) experience, including experience within the last year
  • Intensive Care Unit (ICU) experience
  • ACLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Proficiency with Swan-Ganz catheter monitoring

This position is ideal for RNs with strong Cardio Thoracic ICU or critical care experience looking for a travel contract in a Level I Trauma Center environment. The role demands clinical proficiency, flexibility to float within ICUs, and compliance with extensive credentialing and training requirements.
