Job Opportunity: PICU Registered Nurse

Location: New Brunswick, New Jersey
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Patient Ratios: 1:1-2; 1:3 for intermediate care
  • Must have 2 years of PICU nursing experience (higher experience requirement applies)
  • First-time travelers accepted
  • Schedule includes every other weekend and holiday shifts
  • Must be available to work 2 of 3 holidays, if applicable
  • Floating required to adolescents, pediatrics, PHOC, NICU units
  • Locals accepted

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in New Jersey
  • Minimum 2 years of Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) nursing experience, with experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Current certifications issued by the American Heart Association:
    • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
    • Basic Life Support (BLS)
    • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
  • IV Certification
  • Experience working with adolescent, pediatric, and trauma patients
  • Proficient in:
    • Central Venous Pressure (CVP) monitoring
    • Continuous Venovenous Hemofiltration (CVVH)
    • Hemodynamic monitoring
    • Interpretation and management of EKGs
    • Pediatric Early Warning Scores (PEWs)
    • Insulin administration and pump management
    • Placement and management of nasogastric (NG) tubes

Required Certifications

  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) – AHA required; RQI and instructor cards acceptable
  • Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB) – Required for ER, Peds ER, and Behavioral Health RNs (Iron Temple training)
  • NIH Stroke Certification – Required for adult critical care specialties, ED, Telemetry, MS/Tele, Cath Lab, Labor & Delivery units
  • Chemotherapy Certification – Not required for PICU but may be relevant for oncology units
  • Other Certifications:
    • Pass/Fail Testing (EKG, Medication) required
    • Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam
    • Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam
    • IV Therapy/Infusion Exam
    • Color Blind Testing (if applicable)

Licensure

  • Must hold a valid Registered Nurse (RN) license for New Jersey
  • License name must match legal name on documentation or have proof of name change process initiated

Health & Compliance Requirements

  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within required timeframes
  • Physical exam within the last 12 months, cleared to perform essential job functions and free of communicable disease
  • Drug screen within 30 days of start (10-panel urine drug screen)
  • Seasonal influenza vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually
  • Fit test and respiratory medical clearance required prior to start
  • Immunizations or proof of immunity required for:
    • Measles (Rubeola)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Varicella
    • Hepatitis B (titer required)
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years)
  • Latex allergy screening questionnaire
  • Annual education sign-off and facility-specific orientation requirements

Background & Documentation

  • Criminal background check required within 30 days of start
  • Employment application or resume with 7 years of work history
  • Work history verification for at least 1 year prior to start (New Jersey state requirement)
  • Two professional references within the last 2 years, including at least one managerial reference
  • Completion of facility floating policy acknowledgment for every new assignment
  • Completion of annual education and safety training (OSHA, HIPAA, Joint Commission)

Additional Notes

  • All RNs must complete the Peripheral IV and Central Line Education Package for new bookings (fee applies)
  • Must complete required competency exams within 72 hours of signing contract
  • Candidates switching between RWJ sites within 30 days may have documentation accepted from previous assignment
  • Candidates must comply with all facility-specific policies and training requirements prior to start

This position is ideal for experienced PICU RNs who are comfortable with pediatric critical care, advanced monitoring, and a variety of specialized nursing skills in a fast-paced hospital environment.
