Description

Job Opportunity: Child Life Specialist

Location: Boise, Idaho
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit & Patient Population

  • 50-bed Pediatric Unit
  • Primary areas: Inpatient PICU & Pediatrics
  • Patient age range: Newborn to 18 years old (Neonates & Pediatrics)
  • Typical workload: 15-20 patients
  • May float to NICU, PICU, procedural areas, outpatient clinics

Responsibilities

  • Provide age-appropriate play-based interventions and develop care plans aligned with medical and psychosocial needs
  • Support emotional, social, and cognitive growth of patients within family and cultural context
  • Facilitate developmentally appropriate procedural preparation and support to enhance understanding of medical procedures and diagnoses
  • Coordinate recreational events, visitors, and donations
  • Serve as a resource to hospital staff on psychosocial developmental needs of pediatric patients
  • Minimize fears and stress related to health experiences and foster coping skills

Schedule & Work Environment

  • Typical shifts:
    • 5 days of 8-hour shifts, Monday-Friday, 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM
    • OR 4 days of 10-hour shifts, Friday-Monday, 7:30 AM – 6:00 PM
  • Weekend and holiday rotation may be required depending on shift
  • No call or standby requirements
  • Business casual or scrubs (any color) with closed-toed shoes required
  • Team-oriented atmosphere with no charge nurse assignment
  • Works collaboratively with interdisciplinary team including physicians, nurses, therapists, case managers, and social workers

Orientation & Training

  • 2 days general orientation
  • Half-day Epic training
  • 4 shifts with a preceptor

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 1 year of experience as a Child Life Specialist
  • BLS Certification
  • Professional Certified Child Life Specialist (PCCLS) certification required

Additional Notes

  • Unit has 3 assistants who float to support various areas with activities such as coordinating volunteers, stocking playroom, and infant cuddling
  • Hospital is a children’s hospital within a larger hospital system
  • Schedule may vary and include weekend or holiday shifts depending on staffing needs
