Job Opportunity: Medical Surgical Oncology Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: New Haven, Connecticut
Facility Type: Short Term Acute Care, Level I Trauma Center
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Schedule

  • 2x12-hour shifts & 2x8-hour shifts per week
  • Shift times: 0700-1900 / 0700-1500
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend
  • Floating within scope to meet facility needs: Yes
  • Block schedule accommodation: No
  • On-call: No
  • Guaranteed hours: Yes

Patient Ratios

  • Average nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4-5

Required Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in Registered Nursing specialty
  • First-time travelers accepted
  • Prior travel experience: Not required

Required Licenses & Certifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Connecticut
  • Oncology experience with at least 2 years, including experience within the last year
  • Surgical Oncology experience
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Background & Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check within 12 months of start, including SSN trace, national sex offender, federal and state checks
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start
  • Education verification including foreign equivalency evaluation if internationally educated
  • Drug screening: 10-panel drug screen within 12 months of start
  • Physical exam within 12 months of start
  • Fit mask test within 12 months of start, updated annually (3M N95 preferred)
  • Immunizations and titers:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (highly preferred for certain specialties)
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray documentation
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) titers or vaccinations
    • Hepatitis B vaccination or declination
    • Varicella immunity or vaccination
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season
    • COVID vaccination preferred

Competency & Training Requirements

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam (minimum 85% score) within 12 months of start
  • Color blind testing required for all candidates starting on/after 8/2/2024
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required for certain units
  • Various facility-specific training modules and attestations including:
    • Stroke education (except pediatric and NICU)
    • CLABSI prevention
    • Pressure injury prevention
    • Language services
    • CAUTI education
    • Patient transportation with oxygen
    • Suicide risk and environmental assessment
    • Pyxis ES MedStation training
    • Baxter pump interoperability
    • Patient bedside rounding (except OR, Behavioral Health, Ambulatory, ER/ED)
    • Ventricular assist device awareness
    • Blood administration (annual update required)
    • New employee orientation
    • 21st Century Cures Act module (required for RNs except Home Health)
    • ED handbook (for ED/ER RNs)
    • eCart training (not required for pediatric, periop/OR, outpatient, case managers, home health)
    • Chaperone policy training (required if gap >6 months or updated module)

Additional Notes

  • Must provide a 7-year work history with no gaps greater than 90 days
  • References: One supervisor reference within the past year required for certain ICU assignments (not applicable here)
  • Floating within scope is expected to meet facility needs
  • Pending license accepted but must be active before start date
  • No on-call required
  • Facility uses Epic for charting
  • Parking available at a cost
