Job Description
- Must be flexible with weekend requirements; expected to work 50% of weekends during the contract.
- Refusal to float may result in contract termination.
- Teaching facility: travel nurses must be willing to precept and/or have students shadow them.
- First-time travelers accepted; local candidates not accepted.
- Call-in shifts must be made up or added to the end of the contract depending on FTE status.
- Charge nurse responsibilities may be required with training.
- Floating to different levels of care (Med-Surg, PCU, ICU) may be expected.
- Staffing ratios typically 1:3-4, rarely 1:5 during emergencies.
- Patient population includes CVAs, hydrocephalus, brain tumors/resections, seizures, TBIs, trauma (shootings, stabbings, MVCs), GI surgeries, and large wound care.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Indiana.
- Minimum 2 years of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience, with at least 1 year within the last year.
- Telemetry experience.
- ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association.
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association.
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- Proficient in management of drips.
Prior Travel Experience
- Prior travel experience is not required; first-time travelers accepted.
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Valid Driver’s License or Passport.
- Background checks including criminal, sex offender, education verification, and others as required.
- Physical exam within 12 months of start.
- Fit mask test within 12 months (specific respirators approved).
- Immunizations and titers required or strongly recommended:
- Rubeola (Measles)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Varicella
- Hepatitis B (series, titer, or declination)
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (preferred but not required)
- Flu vaccination or approved exemption (required during flu season)
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months.
- TB testing within 1 year (PPD, QuantiFERON-TB Gold, or T-SPOT) with follow-up if positive.
- Color blind exam (Ishihara or equivalent).
- Medication/pharmacology competency exam.
- Unit competency exam.
- References: Minimum 2 from recent employment with supervisory titles.
- Skills checklist within 12 months, updated annually.
- Employment application with full work history and explanations for gaps.
Additional Notes
- IU Health will not allow Indiana RN license holders to work at their facilities after 11/30/2024, except for Periop/OR RN’s, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers.
- On-site PAPR available at Methodist and University facilities with automatic approval.
- Must complete mandatory orientation modules prior to start.
- Must be willing to comply with all facility-specific forms and policies.
This position is ideal for RNs with neuro and telemetry experience who are flexible with floating and weekend shifts, and comfortable working in a teaching hospital environment with a diverse and acute patient population.
