Job Description
- Work in a corrections health unit serving Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections inmates.
- Float between various Oncology Medical-Surgical (MS) and Progressive Care Unit (PCU) telemetry units as needed.
- Ensure staff safety in a secure, locked corrections environment with controlled access by Corrections Officers.
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:3 in PCU, 1:4-5 in MS.
- Shifts include days, nights, or rotating 12-hour shifts; weekend shifts vary by unit needs.
- EPIC charting experience is required. Oncology experience is preferred but not mandatory.
Patient Population & Care Focus
- Patients with active oncology diagnoses/treatments (solid tumors, hematology).
- Oncology workup admissions and history of cancer admitted for other medical reasons (e.g., COPD, sepsis).
- Non-oncology diagnoses including surgical procedures, pneumonia, abnormal labs, etc.
Key Responsibilities & Skills
- Medical-Surgical and Telemetry nursing care.
- Cardiac monitoring and dysrhythmia interpretation/management.
- Unit-based telemetry monitoring.
- IV insulin protocols and endocrine/metabolic care.
- Feeding tube care and management.
- Pre/post hemodialysis and renal failure management.
- IV therapy including blood product administration, central/peripheral line and PICC line care, and IV starts.
- Medication management including heparin protocols, cardiac drips (no titration), and PCA.
- Respiratory care including CPAP/BIPAP, High Flow Nasal Cannula, ABG interpretation, oxygen therapy, non-invasive airway and tracheostomy management.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams: pharmacy, physical therapy, radiology, respiratory services, social services, rapid response teams, and transportation.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- Minimum of 1 year of Medical-Surgical and Telemetry nursing experience, with experience within the last year.
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association.
- Experience with EPIC electronic health record system.
Background & Compliance Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check including FBI and BCI fingerprinting required prior to start.
- Education verification from an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA).
- Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug test within 3 months of start.
- Health documents required:
- Physical exam within 1 year.
- Immunizations: Tdap, MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella), Varicella, Hepatitis B.
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year or TB questionnaire.
- Seasonal flu vaccination or declination during flu season.
- Competency exams required:
- Medication/Pharmacology competency.
- Unit-specific competency exam.
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam within 1 year of start and annually thereafter.
- References: 2 professional references required, including at least one from a manager or supervisor.
Work Environment
- Secure corrections unit with controlled access and close collaboration with Corrections Officers.
- Dynamic scheduling with potential for day, night, or rotating shifts every 4 weeks.
- Nurse-to-patient ratios designed to ensure quality care in a challenging environment.
