Job Opportunity: ICU Registered Nurse
Location: Lexington, Kentucky
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Description
- Work 3-4 weekend shifts per month (Friday or Saturday night)
- Strong neuro experience required
- Required skills and experience include:
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
- Airway management
- Management of ventilated patients
- Arterial line management (preferred for ER)
- Dysrhythmia management and interpretation
- Central line management
- IV drip management and titration of IV vasopressors
- Isolation precautions
- Triage skills (ER/ER Holding only)
- Computerized documentation
- Nurse to patient ratios 1:1 to 1:2+
- Interpretation of arterial blood gases (ABGs)
- Continuous IV sedation
- Management of patients with multisystem organ dysfunction/failure
- Experience with femoral-popliteal bypasses (fempops), carotid endarterectomies (CEAs), post thoracic surgeries, post craniotomies, and neurosurgeries
Requirements/Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Kentucky
- Minimum 2 years of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) nursing experience, including experience within the last year
- Neurosurgery experience
- One completed travel assignment
- ACLS issued by the American Heart Association
- BLS issued by the American Heart Association
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Management of dysrhythmias
- Continuous IV sedation
- Titration of IV vasopressors
- Experience with femoral-popliteal bypasses (fempops)
- Experience with carotid endarterectomies (CEAs)
Required Certifications & Licenses
- Registered Nurse (RN) license valid in Kentucky
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA only
- BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA only
- NIH Stroke Certification (must be current within 1 year of start)
- NURSYS verification required for RN license
- Additional certifications may be required depending on unit (e.g., PALS, NRP, EFM)
Background & Compliance Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check within 1 year of start, updated annually
- Education verification matching specialty required prior to start (diploma or transcript acceptable if verification unavailable)
- Drug screening: Negative 9-panel urine drug screen within 90 days of start
- Physical exam within 1 year of start (not required by facility but required by agency standards)
- Fit mask test (respirator fit test) updated annually
- Immunizations and health documents required:
- Tdap within 10 years
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) - 2 vaccines or IgG titer required
- Varicella - 2 vaccines or IgG titer required
- Hepatitis B series, titer, or declination
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption (required during flu season Oct 1 - Mar 31)
- COVID-19 vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption
Additional Requirements
- 2 professional references required (1 reference if non-clinical)
- Unit-specific skills checklist required and must be updated annually
- Pass/fail EKG competency testing required for ICU, Med Surg/Tele, and Tele units
- Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) training may be required depending on specialty/unit
- Photo for badge with specific guidelines (clear, no filters, solid background)
Notes
- Candidate must provide a current Driver’s License if driving is a major job function
- Separate background check approvals may be required for different facilities within the system
- Work history verification may be required if background check reveals issues or gaps over 30 days
This position is ideal for experienced ICU RNs with strong neuro skills and prior travel experience looking for a travel contract in Kentucky.
